Publisher's summary

This gripping story of courage and achievement is the account of Robert Falcon Scott's last fateful expedition to the Antarctic, as told by surviving expedition member Apsley Cherry-Garrard. Cherry-Garrard, whom Scott lauded as a tough, efficient member of the team, tells of the journey from England to South Africa and southward to the ice floes. From there began the unforgettable polar journey across a forbidding and inhospitable region. On November 12, 1912, in arctic temperatures, the author, in a search party, found the bodies of Scott and his companions along with poignant last notebook entries, some of them recorded in this work.

Among Apsley Cherry-Garrard's friends and admirers were John Galsworthy, H. G. Wells, Arnold Bennett, and Bernard Shaw. His background in the arts and humanities makes The Worst Journey in the World stand out as a literary accomplishment as well as a classic in the annals of exploration.

Critic reviews

"Robert Whitfield picks up on Cherry-Garrard's dry sense of humor, stiff-upper-lip approach to adversity, and appreciation for nature, the dogs and ponies on whom the expedition depended, and the polar landscape." ( AudioFile)

An amazingly incredible journey

It's a long story with many interesting parts but some dry parts. However, I wanted to know the history. And I felt it important to complete it in honor of the men who endured so much. What's a few slow parts compared to their rigorous journey?

Like Labyrinth of Ice, amazing story of expedition

I am always blown away by people engaging in adventures I can't even to BEGIN to imagine doing. I get a paper cut and whine. These guys have gangrenous appendages they consider amputating, yet continue on. SMH
Labyrinth of Ice, about the Greeley expedition, was a better written book, thus a bit more engaging than this one, which was basically a recording of journals. (And who keeps a daily journal when they are in -67 degree temps with frostbitten fingers!?!).
I'm not sure I would have listened to the audiobook if the superb Simon Vance had not been the narrator, as the writing was a bit tedious, but still, an incredible story of perseverance, determination and drive.

Excellent Story of the RF Scott Expedition!

Great telling of this expedition at the peak of the Antarctic Golden Age. Stories of truly amazing men and the feats they accomplished. Recommended read for all polar enthusiasts! Not quite as much of a nail biter as “Endurance” was but still amazing to hear!

Excellent!

This is an expertly structured and unsentimental account of the hardships faced by the crew of the Terra Nova Expeditition during their journey to the South Pole. After having read the book before listening to this audiobook, I must say that the narrator truly captures the tone of the book perfectly. This is truly one of the best books I've ever read or listened to.

Why would anyone WANT to do this?

Overwhelming. Makes me thankful for my warm house and bed, good food, and all my blessings. I cannot understand what would make someone purposely put himself in such a situation. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Thought it got LT long at times

But then I heard that he was leading us to the climax the way it happened.

Endurance and her last journey

With the recent finding of the Endurance, it peaked my interest to learn more about the ship and its journey. The story was very interesting and I liked how the author used his journal as well as others in this story. I would be interested to read more about the survivors and their return home.

Amazing tale well told

I've read other accounts of Scott's last voyage and this is by far the best. Told by one of the team that survived and wanting to do justice to the endeavor, gathered accounts of others in addition to his own. Wonderfully read.

20 hours of "Captain's Log"

It was interesting but it was 20 hours straight audio in a manner read like "Captain's Log." Be prepared. But it was educational.
