Editorial reviews

There have been other biographies of the Prophet of Islam, a few written by authors living in non-Muslim countries (Yusuf Islam's splendid audio work The Life Of The Prophet springs instantly to mind here), but not that many by non-Muslims. And it is purely because Robert Spencer is not a Muslim that he is able to discuss, without fear and without any degree of 'political correctness', aspects of the holy man's life that many, both believers and unbelievers, hitherto did not know.

Mr. Spencer is no stranger to controversy, as his books and his 'Jihadwatch' Web site speak for themselves, yet he manages never to pull his punches. He takes quotations from the Qur'an, and other works held in high regard, and uses them to present different sides of the Prophet's character: his skill as a military leader, his views on other religions, his pressure and agitation for constant war against unbelievers. It's a challenging work, and will probably win him fans and sworn enemies in equal measure.

James Adams reads the audiobook, endowed with a mellow English accent, yet tackling the Arabian pronunciation with skill and aplomb. The English accent surprised me, since Robert Spencer is American, but being a straight factual work I believe a good voice from either side of the Atlantic would suffice. I listened in one sitting; the near seven hours passing remarkably swiftly (always a good sign) and the narration and audio quality were of consistently high quality. Simply an all-round excellent book.

Publisher's summary

In The Truth about Muhammad, New York Times best-selling author and Islam expert Robert Spencer offers an honest and telling portrait of the founder of Islam - perhaps the first such portrait in half a century - unbounded by fear and political correctness, unflinching, and willing to face the hard facts about Muhammad's life that continue to affect our world today. Spencer details Muhammad's development from a preacher of hellfire and damnation into a political and military leader who expanded his rule by force of arms, promising his warriors luridly physical delights in Paradise if they were killed in his cause. He explains how the Qur'an's teaching on warfare against unbelievers developed, with constant war to establish the hegemony of Islamic law as the last stage.

The largely unknown underpinnings of Jihad

Would you consider the audio edition of The Truth About Muhammad to be better than the print version?

The audiobook is very well done. I don't know if the print version can compare.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Truth About Muhammad?

The book has many memorable moments and each is backed up by references to the Quran and other authoritative documents.

Have you listened to any of James Adams’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to James Adams before. He is quite good.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Islam - the Religion of Violence and Subjugation

Any additional comments?

This is a very informative book and the information is disturbing.

Islamism vs Muslims

A true follower of Islam will follow the Quran & the Hadith all others are backsliding in their faith or playing a deception game with western culture until they have a majority populace to overthrow the ideology of western civilization!!! It’s that simple, wake up American don’t cower in the PC world of influence but stand for Truth, His name is Jesus Christ not the Isa of the eschatological views of Quran but God in human form as He pleases to personalize His character of monotheism in three different personalities God the Father, God the Son (the Incarnate One) and God the Holy Spirit. Do not be deceived my dear friend, seeking for Truth. The Truth has a name, Jesus of Nazareth (Jn.14:6) from the New Testament the book of John. There is a strong delusion being sent to the earth because we have rejected the love of the Truth. In the last days (eschatology, which means the study of the last days) there is coming upon the face of the earth a one world leader, whom will bring a one world government, a one world religion in the Quranic eschatology this person is the Messiah then caliph or in Shia sect of Islam the 12th imam in the Biblical Text this same person is the antiChrist. Only one can be Truth, your soul weighs in the balance of this decision of whom you will or have followed!!!! Robert Spencer does a phenomenal exegetical upon the Islamic history and its writings!!!!

Bazinga

I'm spending some time in Saudi Arabi and wanted to learn about the customs, courtesies, and history. Jeddah is a beautiful city and I look forward to learning more about the country.

This was my second book on Muhammad in as many months. It was available via the Audible Plus catalog. It added to my limited knowledge and I have a few other books lined up to expand upon what I've learned here. The author did a good job. This book was the other end of the spectrum compared to my previous book on Muhammad by Karen Armstrong. It's nice to get competing views on Muhammad's life. The narration by James Adams was good.

Disclaimer: My enjoyment of the narrator is based on my listening speed. I only leave 5 stars for books I've listened to or will listen to multiple times. I'll update my review if I listen again.

Probably a better read than the audio.

The story, while well researched, is too detailed regarding all the battles and commings and goings of the different characters. With an abundance of references, in the printed form the reader can choose whether to skip the references or to consult all, some, or a particular one at a given point, but in the audio presentation I found it annoying having to listen to all those meaningless numbers read out every so often, interrupting the line of thought. I would suggest a new recording, with either none or only the most outstanding references read out.

A book all should read

Well researched and referenced, it will open your eyes to the truth about Muhammad in his own words as handed down. As well as his revelations to justify everything he did some times after the fact.

wrong reader for such a book

It was quite painful listening to the narrator completely butcher pronunciation of Arabic names, locations, and all the Arabic words throughout the book. some of them were so badly read, that it was difficult to even identify what was being said. However, I truly appreciated the content, and the things I learned from listening to it.
