Publisher's summary

All too often, we hear about the dangers of male friendships, in which peer pressure prevails over common sense. But for George Jenkins, Sampson Davis, and Rameck Hunt, strong and supportive male friendship was a powerful antidote to the temptations and pitfalls of street life. It led three boys to make a vow to be there for one another, to encourage one another every step of the way, until they overcame the odds and became doctors.

In The Pact, the three share the account of their struggle to keep the pledge they made: a pledge that would alter the course of their lives and lead them to success they could barely imagine. Today Davis and Hunt are doctors, and Jenkins is a dentist. The success of the three doctors is proof that young men can bring out the best in one another and themselves instead of pulling one another down, and it demonstrates that when we "stand on the solid rock of brotherhood" as Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote, remarkable things can happen.

Critic reviews

"Teens, especially those at risk, who hear this tale of the authors' struggle to make something of their lives in the face of the enormous temptations of the street and to support each other so that all three might succeed will receive a gift: an extraordinary model of self-determination." (Library Journal)
"Through the strength of their friendship, together these three young men defied the odds. They are an inspiration to young people everywhere, and their message is one that can transform the world." (Bill Cosby)
"The authors aren't professional readers....But the authenticity of their urban accents and the earnestness and sincerity in their voices give their inspiring tale an immediacy that would be lost with a professional narrator." (Publishers Weekly)

Worth a Listen

Alternating chapters narrated by the authors. Excellent sharing by these 3 men who met as boys in Newark, NJ area, of their stories of the difficulties of growing up in the black neighborhoods, finding their way, one step at a time, eventually through education, to The Pact that led them each to become doctors who now live in and give back to that same community. None of them had a straight or easy path, but they supported each other, had some helpful mentors, and a lot of inner strength. I noticed this book at our library website as part of a town-wide reading selection. Glad I listened to it and heard these stories.

Very inspirational !

I actually had to read this book for college writing class. It's the book of the semester. This book is great! I also liked the narrator even though he spoke in slang it was a perfect fit for the characters , it was much easier to imagine the guys and their lives. I really connected to the book I was emotional when bad things or sad things happened to the 3 boys & their families. Overall it's a great read especially if you feel you need to be dug out of a whole because these three guys went through a lot ; pos/neg peer pressure , they lacked role models but also gained positive role models through out there journey, they got lucky and lastly got educational opportunities that if they didn't receive or work hard for who knows where they'd end up.

Im-PACT-ful!!!

I thought sharing the ugly parts was so great and useful--it gives all of us hope. The sharing of the ritual of police brutality in the African American community is timely. This is a must read for every student and an excellent choice for a bookclub.

Nicely written, beautifully spoken, some chapters my eyes swelled with tears. Gives me the motivation to continue with my dreams of becoming an MD.

everyone should read this book because it hits multi-faceted different demographics in a plethora of ways! This sheds light in a space of Darkness that doesn't normally receive this light and how a rose bush can grow through concrete when bonded together by a pack!

What a powerful testament of friendship!

While listening to Karen hunter on Sirius XM Urban radio channel 126 these doctors came in for an interview and mentioned their book. What an amazing experience it was too walk through their Journey with them. It turned out to be such a powerful amazing moving Testament of what friendship can be like. The greatest lesson for young and old is that friendship that's honest and has plenty of communication allows for friends to become sometimes more than family. Thank you for being so candid with your stories. I cried, I laughed, as a mother I was proud and so hopeful. I'm so grateful to have come across your book. Thank you again and may God bless you and your loved ones!
