Publisher's Summary

Winston Churchill is perhaps the most important political figure of the 20th century. His great oratory and leadership during the Second World War were only part of his huge breadth of experience and achievement. Studying his life is a fascinating way to imbibe the history of his era and gain insight into key events that have shaped our time.

In political office at the end of WWI, Churchill foresaw the folly of Versailles and feared what a crippled Germany would do to the balance of power. In his years in the political wilderness, from 1931 to 1939, he alone of all British public men, continually raised his voice against Hitler and his appeasers. For over 50 years, he was constantly involved in, and usually at the center of, the most important events of his age. It was, however, his obduracy on matters of principle, his fortitude in the face of opposition, and his perseverance in standing alone that defined him.

What the Critics Say

"Manchester is not only a master of detail but also of 'the big picture'....I daresay most Americans reading The Last Lion will relish it immensely." (National Review)
"[Manchester] can claim the considerable achievement of having assembled enough powerful evidence to support Isaiah Berlin's judgment of Churchill as the largest human being of our time." (Alistair Cooke)

    "I have 2 new heros!"

I can now add William Manchester and Frederick Davidson to Winston Churchill's name on my short list of heros. This biography brings not only Churchill, but all of his friends, enemies and influencers to life. The author's attention to all the players in this lifelong drama transforms the course of history into a compelling drama that held my attention through 41 hours of excellent narration. Frederick Davidson does an outstanding job with all the characters' voices and personalities. It was an absolutely spellbinding history lesson.

    "Excellent for the Historian"
What made the experience of listening to The Last Lion the most enjoyable?

For me, reading this book would have proven difficult at times since it truly minutely picks apart some events. So listening is the only way for me. It should also be noted this recording is very dated.

    Any additional comments?

You realize early on the enormous research performed to tackle this subject. The credits at the end are spectacular, supporting this enormous project. So it is truly a joy to understand the process and assistance the author received to weave together all the pertinent material from all related political figures' archives etc.You simple wish all Americans had an understanding of this part of our world history but unfortunately this book would be too much for the average public. My educated wife put on headphones to block out the readers voice of Churchill as it severely grated on her and the subject certainly didn't interest her. That is a shame as this work/book is superb although very detailed.

"Classic biography on a great leader"
What made the experience of listening to The Last Lion the most enjoyable?

Have had the paper books (both volumes) for a long time, but had trouble staying with reading them. But listening has been much easier. The reader does a great job, has a good pace, and it's not hard to listen for an hour or two at a time.

What did you like best about this story?

It's fascinating that Winston Churchill turned out as good as he did, having had a pretty dysfunctional early life. After listening to the book, I realize he had lots of

What about Frederick Davidson’s performance did you like?

He's easy to listen to. He has a quite different voice any time he is quoting Churchill.

    "Not good for audio"

Although this book would probably be really great to read, there is too much detail to absorb in audio format. It is too difficult to catch all the interesting facts, and when listening to audio you can't take a second to reflect on anything, or else you start missing the following passages.

Terrific book the reader makes it so much better than a read. I strongly dislike Vol 2 because of the reader.

    "Uggh"

Verbose, pompous, tedious. I quit at the 5 hr mark. The book is more about the times and culture of 19th century Victorian England and has little to nothing about Churchill. This is more a sociology book than a biography.

This book is very interesting and does not only deal with WSC but it gives flavor to the era as well as giving the background of family members, friends and the like.

    "Absolutely first rate"

Not only an incredibly well written biography done by a biographic wizard, but narration that brings this very long story alive. Short of hearing Churchill tell his own story, I can't imagine a better job.
