Funny and Fun

I love the sound of Dan Savage's voice; I've enjoyed listening to him since I went through the This American Life archives, so I love picking up the audible books that he narrates.

I delayed listening to The Kid because I wasn't certain how relevant it would seem today. Other than a few minor references that make it clear that this story wasn't written yesterday (mostly references to where LGBT rights are, or how living in Seattle was then) this story is deeply touching. It's about trying to make a family, how people relate to each other and define their roles, and of course, Dan Savage being himself. A very sweet, funny, and touching story. Highly recommended!

not as woke as I'd expect from Dan Savage

anti-adoption-friendly language, didn't say if birth mom consented to publicizing her story, blatantly fatphobic

Great book

Couldn’t find anything wrong with the book. humorous, yet surprisingly moving, the struggle to have a child when both parents are same sex.

Honest, great read!

Honest, funny, sad, thought-provoking; this book holds all of it! I’d highly recommend to any parent or parent-to-be for a look inside a gay couple’s adventure, challenges, obstacles - fair and very unfair - involved in open adoption of their son.

Sad, sarcastic, and grating...terrible

Couldn’t get through the first few chapters. It’s a dated, and biased look at gay adoption through Dan Savage’s bitchy, bitter old queen eyes. I cringed when he attacked the straight people in their adoption classes...I cringed when he talked about the stupid fight he had with his would-be partner about Bjork on their road trip. How / why would they adopt a kid together if they can’t even get through a simple road trip. Skip this book my fellow LGBTQ adoptive parents. There must be better, less bleak perspectives on gay adoption than this. We are better than this...rise above. I feel bad for Dan Savage. Poor, miserable man that he is...

Hot too much a story

I never thought about how gay adopted kids. And from my prejudice I don’t believe gay could be a good father. But this book is so relaxing and interesting, good to know they became terrific parents, and the author is soooo bitchy. Love him. Hate him. His description makes me wonder what Terry looks like, and what kind of person he is. Someone could fell in love with Dan,wow.

Glad I got it.

I was worried about this book being published in 1999 and I found it surprising how relevant it still is. His concerns, brainstorming it parallels me and my fiancé as we are talking about this now. We want kids some day. It was touching and above all it was really helpful. I listened to this after American Savage and it made for a better listen.
