Critic reviews

"A subtle and sympathetic witness, Theroux is an equally ardent proponent of meeting confrontations head-on. Editing more than six years of her personal reflections, Theroux goes public in this elegiac memoir of love and loss, an elegant tribute to the resiliency of human nature." (Booklist)
“What a wonderful, wonderful book! I felt like I was on a little journey. It really made me think beyond the page. The Journal Keeper reads like a case study of a person’s life. You will read it more than once.” (Amy Sedaris)

Journal Keeper a Memoir

This is an intelligent, insightful funny book. When I purchased it I though it was light and easy to listen to book. Within 10 minutes I had restarted the story. Phyllis Theroux is a woman my age. In understand why she journals. I do the same. I can't express enough the wit and intelligence of this writer, who is also the narrator. It is her life, the good, the bad, the ugly. I have listened to it twice to pick up the literary references . For now it is my default favorite. I highly recommend The Journal Keeper.

What disappointed you about The Journal Keeper?

It doesnt translate into spoken word. I was disappointed. It was tedious. I didn't enjoy the narration, the content, the voice. There were snippets of wisdom that made me want to like it, but I found myself fighting to continue to listen. I think I liked the author. I would have liked her more for 5 minutes a week, or a month.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Different genre.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Reading it?

What character would you cut from The Journal Keeper?

I can't say there's a least favorite character, because they are her friends and family. I like her relationship with her mother.

Any additional comments?

This might have been a good written word book. It might have been a fun and charming book to lick up and read a page from time to time, but hours and hours of entries read in no particular order, went from curious, to tedious, to turn it off!
