Seen around the world, John Carlos and Tommie Smith’s Black Power salute on the 1968 Olympic podium sparked controversy and career fallout. Yet their show of defiance remains one of the most iconic images of Olympic history and the Black Power movement. Here is the remarkable story of one of the men behind the salute, lifelong activist John Carlos.

John Tells His Story Well

He paid a great price for exercising a freedom that this country selectively holds in high esteem.

Revolutionary History!

This is an amazing story that everyone should be familiar with. John Carlos, Tommie Smith and Peter Norman all faced incredible backlash in the US and Australia. The heartbreaking tales of tremendous loss, suffering and poverty, are shameful, and should have been a national embarrassment at the time. Since the book's publication, in May 2011, there's been an explosion of athletes finding ways to use their podium to speak out or protest the right things, and they're still being marginalized. This story serves as a blueprint for those with a platform of some sort, and how to use it to raise consciousness!

Great history and we'll told.

I didn't think I would about the book, but I was wrong. I pulled an all nighter to finish it.

A sorrowful reminder of the pain of racism.

I would recommend this book.
