Publisher's summary

In his number-one best seller The Perfect Storm, Sebastian Junger describes Linda Greenlaw as "one of the best sea captains, period, on the East Coast." Now Greenlaw tells her own riveting story of a 30 day swordfishing voyage aboard one of the best-outfitted boats on the East Coast, complete with danger, humor, and characters so colorful they seem to have been ripped from the pages of Moby Dick. The excitement starts immediately, even before Greenlaw and her five-man crew leave the dock - and it doesn't stop until the last page. Under way, she must cope with nasty weather, equipment failure, and treachery aboard ship, not to mention the routinely backbreaking work of operating a fishing boat.

Displaying a true fisherman's gift for storytelling and a true writer's flair for both drama and reflection, Greenlaw offers an exciting real-life adventure tale filled with the beauty and power of the sea.

A Fun Listen and Enjoyable Listen

This was a fun and light listen. I'm always skeptical of books narrated by the author, but in this case I was wrong. While she has a slightly monotone narration, it's still very engaging. The book is pretty light and quickly engages you in to her experience. It has encouraged me to download other books by her. I enjoyed it, and it was the perfect length so as to entertain, without going on too long to bore. Well worth it.

Enjoyed the stories

I live in New Hampshire. The Atlantic is an easy drive from home. I have been seeing lobster and fishing boats at the coast every time I visit. This book is far from my usual subject matter. But I am so glad I found it. I really enjoyed hearing the true life stories of a real fishing vessel captain. It is well written and even made me laugh at times. As a bonus this is a woman who is sharing her experiences. Loved it! I definitely recommend it.

Details, Details, and More DETAILS!!!!

I love the sea and everything about it. I respect the fisherman that risk their lives in this dangerous profession. But this book was one of the most boring I have ever read, the drone of details stole away my interest as I could hardly wait until the book was over. Unless you are seriously thinking of becoming a professional fisherman, skip this book. If you are considering it, this is the most concise and detailed book anywhere on how to do it, what to expect once you leave the dock and anything else you may wish to know but forgot to think of asking. There is no doubt the author is great at what she does because of the attention to details. But she is not a good author. The Perfect Storm was a great book because you could not put it down, this book is hard to finish because I could not stay awake.

Linda’s story makes me want to go fishing. She did an extraordinary job capturing the characters who pursue this career

Buy the book and read yourself

Author's reading very amateurish, stumbling, disappointing. Good story, needed professional reader! Neatly returned audible to buy and read the book, because her reading spoils it, but unhappily finished listening.

Magnificent story!

Madame Greenlaw is an exceptional storyteller and is an example to everyone who isn't afraid to chase a dream and work hard for it. This book literally changed my life. Thank you, Captain!

Feeding me the ocean and swordfish

The story explains what a 30 day trip at sea fishing for swordfish is like for the crew and the captain.
There is allot of description that really helps the listener. The reader does read a little fast though.
I do recommend this book.

Needed to read for class

This was a book I needed to read for class and this reading was super helpful. The story was a lot better than expected and I was entranced the entire time. Linda Greenlaw describes the feverish need to be on the water so much more accurately than I’ve ever heard someone describe. The reader for this recording was easy to listen to and a good reader.
