Publisher's summary

In 1954, in a remote South American village, a four-year-old girl was abducted and then abandoned deep in the Colombian rainforest. So begins the incredible true story of Marina Chapman, who went on to spend several years alone in the jungle, her only family a troop of capuchin monkeys. Using instinct to guide her, she copied everything they did and soon learned to fend for herself.

At around 10 years old, a completely feral Marina was returned to civilisation by hunters, who sold her as a slave to a brothel. Beaten daily and groomed to be a prostitute, she escaped - to live the perilous existence of a Colombian city street kid. Marina's life as a wild child wasn't over. In some ways, it had only just begun.

This is her astonishing story.

Captivating, disturbing and a GREAT ending!

I acquired this audio book after hearing a friend talk about it. My plan was to listen while on an 8-hour road trip alone. I started it before the trip and couldn't stop listening whenever possible. Knowing it was supposed to be true I began to question the possibility of a child surviving everything Marina reported. I searched the web for more information. I found interviews of Marina with her lovely daughter who helped capture her story and publish it. I am convinced it happened and that her recollections are accurate. Her growth was stunted from lack of food and she is only 4'9" and in her 60's now. It is a truly surreal, amazing and miraculous story. She had to have an extremely strong will to survive. She was a fighter. I am a person of faith in God and that he works miracles. I can only believe Marina is where she is today in life because of His Hand upon her and that He was moved by her strong will to see her through. I highly recommend listening to her story and finding her on YouTube to see her in life now.

biography

I knew there was a bug problem with kidnappings, sex trade and such, but to hear of someone's personally story, and even remembering as young as she did. It put you in touch with it more than just hearing it on the news. It is sad and heart breaking how people are treated in some countries, especially women and children.

I couldn't finish

First, I bought the book thinking it was WWII fiction. My mistake, same title, different book!
That being said, it is the jungle book revisited. She is living with monkeys!! I kept listening thinking it would quickly pass, it didn't. I have since returned the book.

Beautiful and very entertaining true story!

The narrator has such a beautiful voice. She relays this amazing true story in a magical way. I'm very grateful to have found this book and I'm even more thankful it's available on audio book. I love escaping into the story when I'm driving or cleaning or doing other things.

Incomplete in many ways

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

People interested in children's survival stories might find this likable.

What could Marina Chapman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

This story is incomplete! We have no idea what happened in her life after she found a good home; her education, emotional problems, etc. Did she ever find her real parents or try? So much is left out. What happened to the Santos crime family?

What didn’t you like about Pam Ward’s performance?

Mrs. Ward's voice is a bit harsh and was very hard to listen to, especially when speaking as a little girl. It just didn't do the child any justice or the listener. Frankly, it was annoying and detracted from the story.
