The Essays of Sir Francis Bacon | [Sir Francis Bacon]

The Essays of Sir Francis Bacon

Francis Bacon, the great English philosopher, lawyer, scientist, and statesman, is also remembered as a formidable writer of prose. These 58 essays are his greatest literary legacy. Rather than merely summarizing popular philosophy, Bacon attempted to change the shape of other men's minds, and there is little doubt that many minds have been persuaded by these eloquent essays.

Publisher's Summary

Francis Bacon, the great English philosopher, lawyer, scientist, and statesman, is also remembered as a formidable writer of prose. These 58 essays are his greatest literary legacy. Bacon's education was grounded in the classical texts of ancient Greece and Rome, but his writings bring clarity and color to the dry scholasticism of medieval learning. Among his lofty subjects are truth, death, nobility, travel, marriage, health, riches, beauty, negotiating, ambition, and gardens. Rather than merely summarizing popular philosophy, Bacon attempted to change the shape of other men's minds, and there is little doubt that many minds have been persuaded by these eloquent essays.

    "Great possibilities"

I was looking forward to hearing this. However the only available audio recording was so poor I couldn't understand it when any ambient noise intruded. I wanted to listen to it in my car as I was driving. Too noisy. I haven't found time to listen to it more than about a half of an hour. When I did listen, I enjoyed it a good deal.

    "Inaudible"

This is collection of essays, written in a Shakspearean-like English,
recorded in format 2, and read by a a man with a fairly thick English
accent who sounded like is lips are slightly to large to speak clearly. I
could barley make out any of the sentences. It is very unfortunate
because I was able to detect, behind the muffled sounds of the narrator's
    voice, something good

    "Not worth the time..."

This is one of the worst selections I have yet listened to.
The narration was a bit boring and being format 2 the noise level is high.
Even with that, the essays are advice to posterity from an English nobleman.
The subject choices and advice does not age very well, nor reflect particularly well on Mr. Bacon’s character.
This volume does not focus on the scientific method or the scientific revolution.

    "At last! Great sound..."

Like some of the other reviewers, I too kept checking to see when this book would allow sound quality better than "2".

"The Essays of Sir Francis Bacon"

I listened to this book years ago in tape form and enjoyed it enough to wish to listen again. Unfortunately, this recording was too painful to endure. I've been checking periodically for a couple of years, now, hoping Audible has upgraded this work. So far, no luck. If they ever do, I'm sure I'll enjoy listening. But not before.

"But for a very poor recording."

What a shame this can not be recorded again. Poor audio ruined it for me.

    "Interesting content, poor recording."
What would have made The Essays of Sir Francis Bacon better?

Have them recorded by a better recording.

What do you think your next listen will be?

    Bill Bryson's At Home.

What didn’t you like about Bernard Mayes’s performance?

The narrator is fine, the recording is poor.

What character would you cut from The Essays of Sir Francis Bacon?

    Observant and inventive.

"Reader was good, book was a bit lame"

I had expected better from Bacon. I always heard what a great philosopher he was. He is noted as a father of the modern scientific method. However, the advice on family life, politics etc. in these essays reminded me of Machiavelli in subject matter, but not as ruthless. There is very little philosophy here, just a lot of fatherly advice. Well at least I can now say I have read Bacon.

The reader was fine as well as the production quality.
