If you think ghosts are only responsible for hauntings, think again. The Demonologist reveals the grave religious process behind supernatural events and how it can happen to you. Used as a text in seminaries and classrooms, this is one book you can't put down. For over five decades, Ed and Loraine Warren have been considered America's foremost experts on demonology and exorcism. With over 3,000 investigations to their credit, they reveal what actually breaks the peace in haunted houses. The book was expertly written by Gerald Daniel Brittle, a nonfiction writer with advanced degrees in literature and psychology, specializing in mystical theology. Don't miss the Warrens in the new blockbuster movie The Conjuring.

I like scifi and urban fantasy. I don't like romance novels. If you are the same my reviews should help.
Yes. If the person in question was into the paranormal this is a good choice. the best part is that these are supposed to be true stories. Some of them are even better than what fiction writers davelop anyway.
The story about Annabelle the doll.
It was not really a charachter driven book so this really doesn't apply. I will say that the narrarrator did a good job.
Just say no to ouija boards!
This is a good listen. You may have to suspend disbelief depending on what your views are on the subject of the paranormal. Also, some of the Warrens ideas are a bit left field, but they aren't overbearing about their beliefs so I had no problem. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book. I read it originally 20 years ago or so, although the title may have been a little different . The good news is that it still holds up.
I have taught my two boys at home for the last 8 years. A love of literature of all kinds led me to Audible.
Spiritually frightening, Rich with detail
I read this book to hear about what the Warren's have faced throughout their career. I was not disappointed. I appreciate their opinions and insights about the patterns they have observed in the cases in which they have been involved.
The demonic is not unpredictable and is not unmeasurable.
This book clearly chooses the most extreme cases that illustrate what the Warren's have dealt with in their long career of helping families confront the paranormal and the demonic in the paranormal world. If you have never experienced anything paranormal or have never read any book at all about non-fiction paranormal this may not be the best first book with which to begin. If you are an experienced non-fiction paranormal reader and/or have faced down your own paranormal events then this is a truly interesting and insightful read. A wealth of disturbing and unsettling situations are discussed in this book from the Warren's unique and personal point of view. If you are tolerant of others' views and listen to be informed and to understand then this book is an essential addition to your paranormal library.
How normal Ed and Lorraine really are.
I liked the stories that were told. It is hard to really know a lot about them and to hear some "stories" one would think they were very religious. Though they are spiritual, they seem very easy to approach and talk to and I was very glad for that. They are very careful to make a distinction between what is considered "bad" regarding the spiritual beliefs that have been demonized by fundamentalist, the Rapture people and some by Hollywood. I really enjoyed the stories that they told and how educating they are to explain certain things. They are private people and I understand why, but they are so much like everyday people and seem to just want to help where they can. They could be your next door neighbor.
Hard to really say, he did them all so well, even the female and kids. Good narrator.
I liked that they set out to educate people about what is dark and what is not, that distinction seems to get forgotten and tried to warn those about fooling around with things that they know nothing about. I wish I could meet Lorraine very much.
The Warrens seem like such wonderful people that had a chance to do something that is hard for some people, through no real fault of their own. People do care about the troubles of others, but there is not always a way to help your neighbor. To help some one in this way is remarkable. There are so many things I wish I could ask Lorraine.
I first became aware during the Amittyville Horror investigation as I lived in PA at the time. There were many theories about what was going on and of all of them, I thought that Lorraine's not only was correct, but also that of all of the speculation her's made the most sense and was very believable.
I think whether you are a believer in this type of phenomenon or not dictates whether this book will truly freak you the hell out. If you are, then damn, it will really make you think about the forces of good and evil. You still have to come at the book with the attitude that its a biography, but there are plenty of scary anecdotes to satisfy the curiosity... Pretty cool listen that freaked me out.... Even if you don't believe in this sort of stuff, it will be an interesting read.
educational,compelling,and awe inspiring scary.
that it is based on real, true cases
no, first time listen to anything by Todd
oh yes, warning to all, this is not even close to a "light listen". this is serious stuff, I mean the events that take place in this book will leave you beyond uneasy. if you scare easy or you are not in a good place right now, DO NOT GET THIS AUDIO BOOK! I know you have heard this before, macho b.s. but I don't scare easy. this stuff will get to you.
ok, I have done my duty. this is my only review. it is because I truly felt it was important to give folks a warning. don't get me wrong its a great listen, I gave it the 5 star treatment. just wanted to throw that in, incase someone misunderstood my point.
Ed and Lorraine Warren are to be appreciated and respected. Who could do this stuff with their life and do it so selfless. being more aware than just about anyone at the risk. thank God for his special troopers.
I saw 'The Conjuring' and wanted to know more. I am just that way, factual, investigative and seeking evidence. I also love a good story, and this one didn't fail. Part 'Campfire Scary' part 'Holy Crap, I will never look at an Ouija Borad again' scary. I ended up listening to this along my commute, not quite wanting to listen to this at night.
But in the end, I didn't finish it. Oh it was interesting for sure, but 'Demon Cars along icy roads racing into us' said to me 'Not a Ghost or 'Non Human Spirit' but immagination gone a bit to far.
But still, case studies don't lie, history is there, something is there.
I grappled with the 'Physcial' Part of Energy being able to focus, why can a spirit pull a girl by her hair but you can't touch or see what is doing this. But facts are facts and again, something is doing something out there. Just as I can't see infrared, i am sure that it does exist.
The book was definately more detailed than the movie 'The Conjuring' and mystery surrounds all their case studies. Why they keep a room with so much evil objects is beyond me.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't finish this book out of boredom. I almost never, ever quit a book before the end. I guess as a super postive guy, the very thought of all that Evil, especially at night was just to much to keep putting into my brain.
Dont' take this book lightly. After so much of this book, it makes sense. Why do normal people snap and go on murdering rampage, are so evil to rape, but later not realize why they 'Snaped' Is it the Army of the Fallen Angels that lined up with Satan, eternally corrupting those who seek their dark powers, are full of hate etc.
I just wish there was a companion book 'Angel's among us' that show how great some people truly are, from Mother Teresa, Ghandi, suvirors of the Boston Marathon, such as Lance Benson, who ran the race with no legs. Surely Angels inhabit us just as easily as Demons.
So in the end, super scary because it is real, so real you don't want to pull out a Oujia Board and say 'Talk to me, is there anyone there'
I dare you, after reading this book, I double dog dare you!
Ed and Lorraine both. I truly belive they can tap into these forces of the spirit world.
It was good audio reading, it kept me listening, engaged.
The Devil or God, choose a side, else it be choosen for you. I kid but this point rang true. Be Positive and good things come (I know, I am and they do) but be negative, run to this negative energy and what do you expect will happen.
One of the most fascinating books I couldn't finish..or didn't dare to finish. Read it, you will sew what I mean when you read this book.
Somewhere in the middle
Lorraine Warren, only because I have met Lorraine and I have listened to many interviews with her as well and I just love the way she speaks. The narrator does an excellent job replicating her manner of speaking.
Yes, Mr. Haberkorn brings the story to life, as he does very well at speaking the parts of Ed and Lorraine as they would speak the words themselves. (As noted previously)
Not especially since I was already very familiar with much of the information and people in the book; but I still found it to be very interesting.
Worth a listen, even if you are not a believer. I am not much of a believer in many of the supernatural claims out there, but always enjoy the stories for the entertainment of the story and not to make fun of them or make allegations against the people. I take the stories for what they are and this book is no exception, well done and interesting.
Informative, Scary and Great!
There is no one thing I liked best. This is a great listen. Narrator did an amazing job and the story def stands on its own. I couldnt listen at night as just too creepy.
When Ed says "Ive never met an atheist in a haunted house"
Too many to count! This book is informative and a hell of a ride.. no pun intended. Anyone even thinking of playing with the occult NEEDS to listen/read this book!
Download this book!
I saw the movie The Conjuring last week and wanted to know more about Ed & Lorraine Warren, who are the leads in the film. I didn't know quite what to expect from the book. Turns out it scared me more than the movie! These cases are true. This isn't a work of fiction. The narrator was really good and did so many interesting voices. I really liked Ed's voice, he is very down to earth, even though he has seen so much... I would put this audiobook easily in my top 3 of all time.
It wasn't too religious at all, and the stories are true! You can tell there was a lot of research behind it. Very well written. And very dramatic. Leave the lights on for sure!
Some scenes involving the exorcisms were very intense. Those were my favorite. The demonic voices the narrator did were amazing/terrifying.
Yes! I would have listened it in one sitting, but I had to go to work. When I got back home, I got to listen to the rest of it!
The facts! Ed and Lorraine are people I respect so much in the paranormal world and in general, and I trust everything they say. I love that they're fellow believers and that they are fearless! The true accounts in this book made this book amazing! I didn't want it to end.
I loved the 6 demons with the cockney accents! Omg they were hilarious. Now...if I was in that house, I would have been trembling but listening to them via audiobook was hilarious. They sounded like fun dudes who just liked to have a good time. Too bad they were demons hahaha.
Ed: "Turn off a light."
Demon Frankie: "Ah I can't mate, Billy pulled off my arm."
It was pretty funny before the guttural noises. EEK!
The Cockney demons replay was done very well but honestly all the reenactments of the possessions were impeccable. Very scary, believable, amazing.
The Best EFFING Paranormal Book To Read Ever By Paranormal Legends Ed and Lorraine Warren. AKA Heaven's Warriors. AKA The Coolest Couple Who Ever Lived.
Please somebody turn Ed and Lorraine's other books into audiobooks. This is the only one available! Also, I did not expect this book to be scary. And it didn't sink in until 2 days later when I was getting ready for bed, finding myself convinced I was going to spot a demon in the corner of my eye. I found the tips VERY helpful: Keep a bright house, a positive attitude about life, get baptized, NEVER touch a Ouija board, or mess with any type of magic EVER. This book was seriously a joy. A terrifying joy.
"Great for Bedtime"
Some good scary stories for bedtime. Not overly convinced its all true but well worth a listen
I listened to this for about 3 hours. What I didn't like most about this book was the sheer arrogance that comes across. When asked a question about anything supernatural his answer would never be "I don't know" for example, there will always be a detailed explanation which further leads me to believe he plays on peoples confidence in him. I did not expect this book to give me some proof of other-worlds, it does claim to though, Ed Warren states that he could easily prove these phenonema in a conference yet he doesn't. Why not prove it on tv?
I did think that this book may at least serve as a spooky ghost story but it takes itself too seriously, I feel like I am spending too much time listening to him trying to convince that what he is saying isn't made up.
I am not saying that everything he says is made up I just felt it was.
Loved it, really interesting but chilling in places, what an amazing couple the Warrens are!!
"EXTREMELY FRIGHTENING! DISTURBING & SPOOKY AS HELL"
I actually couldn't stop listening and found it compelling, terrifying, knowledgeable, thought provoking and just a fantastic read. The only time I couldn’t read the book was after dark or when I was alone as found it too disturbing.
I loved both Ed & Lorraine Warren. They made it their life's work to help others that were in very dark situations. They got a calling as no one in their right minds however demented would want to go down this career path unless compelled by something. They came across as really caring, kind and genuinely wanting to help. Believer or not this is based on true facts.
I thought Todd did a fantastic job in bringing the stories to life and the voices he mimicked from Ed, Lorraine to the demonic cockney accents were really good - (found them funny). I would definitely listen to others books he has done. He is a great story teller.
WHEN THERE IS NO MORE ROOM IN HELL, THE DEAD WILL WALK THE EARTH
A lot of scepticals will obviously have a problem with this book and I would not have read this if I hadn’t seen Annabelle or The Conjuring. Just wanted to know behind the story details and also found they worked on Amityville case and so many more…….
Very interesting and good advice given in a world of non believers I was transfixed couldn't put it down a must read or listen
"A wonderful listen"
I would, the story is so interesting and tells the story of the Warrens so beautifully. Such an enjoyable listen, especially in the bath!
Listening how they got into the 'business' and the people they have helped is inspirational.
The story telling. Todd narrates the story so well, it draws you in and I found it difficult to switch off.
Such a wonderful reading voice. He paints such a mental picture.
I wanted to, but unfortunately sleep and work got in the way!
I recommend this to anyone wanting to get the real story behind the movie 'The Conjuring' and 'Annabelle'.
"Fairly standard, needs more voice actors"
The narrator does all voices, even woman, its creepy. Traditional view of exorcism, not bad.
"Good listen but..."
Enjoyed the book but lets be honest we know its a load of old tosh. Seems to me to be 2 Christians trying to show us the power of prayer.
I couldn't put it down, and I struggled to sleep one night just from the thought of the activity in this book. loads of information which I found fascinating. A reccomend to anyone with even a slight interest in this area.
I was compelled to read this book almost in one sitting. I have heard of Ed and Lorraine Warren and know that they attracted supporters and also sceptics over their 'powers.'
My viewpoint was 'sit on the fence' until I listened to this book. It's layout, as a chat between friends reminiscing, or relating advice
to those who have experienced ghost attacks makes it easy to listen to.
I fully believe that the Warren's have witnessed the paranormal events that they claim to have seen. This book must be quite old as Ed Warren passed away some time ago but in his time, he helped many people.
A good listen. An insight as to how the Church views hauntings, Demons and Exorcism. I found myself wanting to hear more!
