The Damage Done is one man's story of an unthinkable nightmare. It is not Warren Fellows' plea for forgiveness nor his denial of guilt, but a story of endurance and survival and the abuse of human rights during the decade of a life wasted in leg irons. It is an essential listen: heartbreaking, fascinating, and impossible to pause.

"Remarkable -- in every way! Every minute is great"

This may be the best book i've listened to all year. It is truly remarkable in every way: the story is gripping, horrifying, and illuminating; the writing is tight, to the point, and creative; and the narrator is one of the, if not the, best i've ever heard -- his timing and intonation is perfect.

Ever wondered what it's like in a prison? How about the worst one in the world? This guy describes the unbelievably inhuman living conditions and torture that the Thai prison system put him through. And he explains how it was not only hell to live through, but how it has scarred him for life.

I listened to this book during my commute and i actually looked forward to it every day (how often can you say that?). I was actually happy when there was a traffic jam or slowdown because i got to listen to more of the book. I was really disappointed when it was over.

Listen to this book -- you will be captivated from start to finish.

    "Takes You There"
Would you listen to The Damage Done again? Why?

Yes, it would still be interesting for me after listening many times because there is so much to think about. It is much more than an story about a prison experience.

What did you like best about this story?

The descriptions allowed me to understand the experiences he endured and to know what he felt about the experiences.

Which character – as performed by David Tredinnick – was your favorite?

All of the character representations were done well - I was able to tell the people apart very easily.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes, when he was caught - I didn't breathe.

    "A World Unknown to Most"

I thought this book was quite interesting and gives the reader a glimpse into a dark world that most (hopefully) will never know. I have heard that some of the prisons across the world can be pretty harsh, but I had no idea exactly what that meant.

The book was written to give the author's history in how he ended up in prison, his time while in prison, and then getting out. The amount of details was not overwhelming and allowed for an easy to follow short story.

The narrator did a great job with the reading and seemed to pronounce all the Thai words correctly. He had an accent, however, it did not cause any problems with understanding him. I would definitely listen to another book narrated by him.

Overall, I thought this was a good book and would suggest it to others.

"Thinking of importing drugs? Read this first!!!"
Where does The Damage Done rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

In my top 5. Hard to comprehend this kind of punishment exists.

What was the most compelling aspect of this narrative?

Good voice for this type of book & many others too.

What about David Tredinnick’s performance did you like?

    All of it.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

That Rodger Rodgerson & Arthur "Neddie" Smith got a few mentions.

    Any additional comments?

Should be a compulsory read in early high school.

    "Courageous"
What did you love best about The Damage Done?

Warren's honesty and integrity shine through.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This is autobiographical in a sense but it is also about prison life.

    Which scene was your favorite?

The synthesis in the epilogue gives perspective. I was reminded of the film HANNAH ARENDT and how evil happens whenever we forget our humanity one to another.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The violence of prison, the cruelty and filth were disturbing.

    Any additional comments?

We take our freedoms in the west for granted.

What made the experience of listening to The Damage Done the most enjoyable?

A new world for me. Very interesting.

What did you like best about this story?

It is chocking and interesting to see how people have to survive in prisons in Thailand and how cruel people can be.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    YES.

"A horrific tale of prison life in another country"
What did you love best about The Damage Done?

I work in an american prison and the contrast from what happens here vs. what happens in this tale is incredibly horrifying. To think these types of bad things goes on in a prison overseas make me kiss the ground I live on. if only our people in prison would realize how good they have it in America.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Damage Done?

The constant brutal behavior of the guards. In America, any correction officer caught just verbally abusing an inmate is immediatly fired, much more it physical abuse, even criminal prsecution by the state.

Have you listened to any of David Tredinnick’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but would listen to any of his narrations since he did a great job here.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

Not to smuggle drugs, obvious of course!

    Any additional comments?

If all the details are really true, not sure how he actually survived. I think this book was heavy on the negative since that is what has been seared into his mind however, there had to be more instances of humanity here that he's not telling. Would have like to hear more stories of hope, stories that made him go on for 12 years because from what I heard, I would have not made it more than a year.

"I did not want this book to end!"

I have been really interested in the current status of Australian and British citizens on death row in Kerobokan Prison since the new Indonesian President has stated there will be no 'Pardons' granted. During my reading I happened upon this book and what a find.

Warren Fellows takes you there. You feel no sorrow for him but he asks for none however you do realize that the treatment of prisoners abroad, foreign or otherwise is beyond a sane person's imaginings.

However even in this part of Hades a man can keep his soul, feel remorse and identify with a power greater than himself and tolerate, even embrace others' beliefs.

David Tredinnick gives us a superb performance. I am sure that many of us multi task whilst enjoying our audible books but I could not do so with this one. I can tell you that this is a first!

Just as with good chocolate it had to be appreciated, quietly and without distraction.

I liked it. It describes life in what is probably the worst prison in the world and makes you think that your ordinary life is quite good (in fact splendid). I have just added Thailand to my list of countries I will never visit just to be on the safe side:)

    "well worth a listen"

this is a book that is so worth listening/reading, I first read it a good few years ago while on a flight to Thailand and just got it for my iphone to listen to in work and found it just as intense this time as I did the first,
its not a look at me and feel sorry for me story, its a man explaining his stupidity for greed in younger years that pays the ultimate price. hopefully it has made someone thinks twice before doing the same thing if they read it.

Where does The Damage Done rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of those books where I struggled getting into work on time. I sat in the car dreading to pause it as I did not want to stop listening. There is only one other book so far that has captured me in such a way. Absolutely brilliant book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Warren Fellows tells is story of being holed up in Bangkok Prisons. Quite rightly he was convicted of smuggling heroin. However, no human being should suffer in such a way and whilst he doesn't plead pity and takes full responsibility you can't help feeling some pity as he reveals a harrowing account of what he saw happen to others, the filth and excrement they lived in, the murders, the insanity and appalling conditions over all.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

    All of it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Oh yes!

    Any additional comments?

    Definitely would recommend a listen.

I've read this book 4 times and listened to it about 50 and never get bored and always seem to be amazed by it..
As the author says at one point "if you think he deserved the punishment he got, well you too are a criminal"
Also it's one of the best narrated audio books I've heard, the narrator truly knows how to put the emotions into the story.
I truly wish all the best for Warren Fellows

The Damage Done is one of the most gripping audibooks I have ever listened to, the great performance really topped off the gripping story. I felt emotionally involved throughout and really enjoyed the horrifying details that were scattered throughout. The book also serves well as a reminder for people not to follow the wrong path in life, no matter how fun it may seem at the time.
