The Art of Happiness

Publisher's Summary

The Dalai Lama is probably one of the only people who, if you ask him if he's happy, even though he's suffered the loss of his country, will give you an unconditional "yes." What's more, he'll tell you that happiness is the purpose of life, and the "the very motion of our life is toward happiness." How to get there has always been the question. He's tried to answer it before, but he's never had the help of a psychiatrist to get the message across in a context we can easily understand.

Through meditation, stories, and the meeting of Buddhism and psychology, the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day depression, anxiety, anger, jealousy, or just an ordinary bad mood. He discusses relationships, health, family, work, and spirituality to show us how to ride through life's obstacles on a deep, abiding source of inner peace. Based on 2,500 years of Buddhist meditations and with a healthy dose of common sense, The Art of Happiness is a program that crosses the boundaries of all traditions to help listeners with the difficulties common to all human beings.

    "Great"
Where does The Art of Happiness rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I really enjoyed this book. I have an admiration for the Dalai Lama after reading the book.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    na

How could the performance have been better?

He talks so slow. I put the speed to 2x and it still could have gone a little faster for me.

What’s an idea from the book that you will remember?

I loved his ideas on accepting stress and problems as part of life.

    "Very infromative and great information"

Here H.H. the Dalai Lama goes through Buddhism and how to use it can be used to defeat our anxiety, anger or even an ordinary bad mood. He tells stories to relate how this has been done by ordinary people every day. He also goes into why spirituality is important in our lives and why its not. He goes through how to find happiness and get through pain by seeing through it. Anyone who has kids that have watched Avatar: the last airbender knows this lesson. Pain is what tells us when something is wrong in our bodies and our lives. We should listen to it to deal with it and release it. As a long time meditation practitioner I found the information very informative.

    "Happy"
What made the experience of listening to The Art of Happiness the most enjoyable?

the topic is very good, and the reasoning is straight forward. It seemed to make sense in many ways.

What three words best describe Howard C. Cutler’s voice?

Sounds like a stereotypical psycho bull..... guy, reading a script. The authors reading left much to be desired. book would have done much better without.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

I would not do so, not appropriate.

    Any additional comments?

good book, topic and coverage quite good,

    "A must read!"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This book opened my eyes to the amazing possibility of true happiness! I have recommended and will continue to recommend this audio book to all of my friends.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Art of Happiness?

I loved listening to the story of the grieving mother. How true it is that often we feel that we are the only ones suffering.

What does Howard C. Cutler bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Mr. Cutler adds a level of connection to his Holiness that I would not have experienced reading the book. His questions and his tone brought the experiences to life.

    "disappointed"

I would have much rather heard this from the Dahli Lama himself instead of a narrator. I did not even finish listening to it because of this.

    "Terrible narration"

I did not enjoy this at all. The narration was so fast and choppy that it was very difficult to understand. What should have been a peaceful and relaxing experience left me feeling stressed and unsatisfied.

"Nice book - I am driver....."

Nice book. I used to drive a lot, so this book is really nice. Also, it contains two voices (two different men read it) so it is good for listening.
