Publisher's summary

In December 1975, the Lutz family moved into their new home on suburban Long Island. George and Kathleen Lutz knew that, one year earlier, Ronald DeFeo had murdered his parents, brothers, and sisters in the house, but the property - complete with boathouse and swimming pool - and the price were too good to pass up.

Twenty-eight days later, the entire Lutz family fled in terror.

This is the spellbinding, best-selling, true story that gripped the nation - the story of a house possessed by evil spirits, haunted by psychic phenomena almost too terrible to describe.

Jay Anson began as a copy boy on the New York Evening Journal in 1937 and later worked in advertising and publicity. With more than 500 documentary scripts for television to his credit, he was associated with Professional Films, Inc. He died in 1980.

Great!

I love myself some good horror stories. This one kept me on my toes. And yelling WTF a few times.

a classic

If you are a horror fan, this should be on your read list. It seems slow in some parts but it picks up fast and is creepy.

Easily Amused

I heard this wasn't exactly the way things happened but I loved it. It was a nice build to pretty terrifying, if true, climax. 70s awesomeness.

Still spooky!

What made the experience of listening to The Amityville Horror the most enjoyable?

Very well paced story. There were enough details given to make it real, but it didn't read like a police report.

What did you like best about this story?

I've seen/read a lot of ghost stories, so I thought this would be full of Hollywood cliches/stuff I've heard repeated often. It wasn't! Everything read like an original ghost story. Loved it!

Which scene was your favorite?

The marching band scenes were super spooky.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, and I did! It only took me a day.

Any additional comments?

I had to speed up the reader slightly, but that took care of any issue I had with him.

leaves you with things to consider

I enjoyed this book immensely. I am a fan of horror and have watched the movies based upon the experiences of the Lutz's and although this isn't a scary story to make you jump, it gives you more information. it does make you consider your disbelief of the super natural and unknown.

A good story, and a good narration

I enjoyed the reading of this book more than I enjoyed the movie. Possibly because it was in book form, it wasn’t as scary as the movie. To me, that is a plus.
