His Holiness the Dalai Lama provides intimate details on an advanced meditation practice called Dzogchen using a visionary poem by the 19th-century saint Patrul Rinpoche, author of the Buddhist classic Words of My Perfect Teacher. Story
Speaking to an audience of Western students, the Dalai Lama shows us how to apply basic Buddhist principles to our day-to-day lives. Starting with the very foundation of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths, he provides the framework for understanding the Buddha’s first teachings on suffering, happiness, and peace. He follows with commentary on two of Buddhism’s most profound texts: The Eight Verses on Training the Mind and Atisha’s Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment, often referring to the former as one of his main sources of inspiration for the practice of compassion.

Story
Treasured by Buddhists of all traditions, The Way of the Bodhisattva (Bodhicharyavatara) is a guide to cultivating the mind of enlightenment and to generating the qualities of love, compassion, generosity, and patience. This text has been studied, practiced, and expounded upon in an unbroken tradition for centuries, first in India, and later in Tibet. Presented in the form of a personal meditation in verse, it outlines the path of the Bodhisattvas - those who renounce the peace of individual enlightenment and vow to work for the liberation of all beings.

Story
In this extensive lesson, Tenzin Gyatso beautifully elucidates the meaning of the path to enlightenment. His discourse arises from the Third Dalai Lama's brilliant and powerful work, Essence of Refined Gold, a classic text that summarizes the meaning of all Buddha's teachings. The subject of Essence is the Lam Rim, a term that literally means "stages on the spiritual path." Through his insightful exploration and interpretation of Essence of Refined Gold, the Dalai Lama speaks directly to the listener, offering spiritual advice, personal reflections, and scriptural commentary.

Interesting anecdotes about the Dalai Lama
- By Mike on 01-16-13
By: His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and others
Publisher's summary
Throughout the program, the Dalai Lama emphasizes the importance of the logical analysis of scriptures, even those in the Buddha's own words. Some teachings, he stresses, "should not be taken literally, but need interpretation." And interpretation is what the Dalai Lama presents in this clear and enjoyable commentary. Included are such familiar Buddhist themes as training the mind, compassion, the nature of suffering, and the practice of calm abiding. Those who practice meditation, whether Buddhist or not, will find this a thoughtful and practical guide, written with the Dalai Lama's characteristic warmth and gentleness.

Story
This introduction to Nichiren Buddhism explores the philosophical intricacies of life and reveals the wonder inherent in the phases of birth, aging, and death. Core concepts of Nichiren Buddhism, such as the 10 worlds and the nine consciousnesses, illustrate the profundity of human existence. This book provides Buddhists with the tools they need to fully appreciate the connectedness of all beings and to revolutionize their spiritual lives based on this insight.

Story
Twenty-seven years ago, Matthieu Ricard gave up a promising career as a scientist to study Tibetan Buddhism - not as a detached observer but by immersing himself in its practice under the guidance of its greatest living masters. Years later, this project was born, and Richard met with his father, Jean-Francois Revel - a French philosopher who became world famous for his challenges to both Communism and Christianity. At an inn, these two profoundly thoughtful men explored questions that have occupied humankind throughout its history.

Story
General interest in Buddhism has never been higher. The story and teachings of a man who lived 2,500 years ago have a special resonance for us today, perhaps because he taught a way of life that was not based on belief in a creator god but rather on personal experience. "Test my words for yourself," he said. But what lies behind those distinctive images of the Buddha, seated with unshakeable poise, with eyes half-closed and a slight smile? Jinananda, a Western-born Buddhist, divides the subject into the Three Jewels....

Lectures on Emptiness
I think this is a translation of "The Second Part of the Stages of Meditation by Acharya Kamalashila".
I think this book focuses on wisdom & understanding regarding emptiness, non-inherence, impermanence, lack of independent existence. Specifically this, rather than other aspects, such as karma.
Ken McLeod is a good narrator.
The Dalai Lama always writes good books. If you can commit to examining his books, they will benefit you much more than westernized, simplified, americanized, christianized "buddhism" marketed by people who are not experts.

precious practical buddhist advice
I loved this audio book as it gives practical guidance to realising enlightenment. It builds upon the Dalai Lama's book 'Becoming Enlightened' and is clearly, if at times monotonously, narrated. To be fair the narration was only at times monotonous by comparison to the previous audibook by the Dalai Lama that I listened to which was excellently narrated by Martin Sheen. I highly recommended this audiobook for deepening one's Buddhist practice; it is not for the beginner.

Good material but poor editing
In the course of my study of Tibetan Buddhism, I have read and listened to many books by the Dalai Lama. Most of them are very good but this one is average. The commentary is helpful and interesting, and the subject is intellectually challenging but the editing is poor. Several times during the recording, the reader repeats words or sentences seemingly by accident. I do not expect that this repetition was in the original text, it simply would not make sense. I also found the reader's delivery to be a bit too monotonous. Granted, many audio books on Buddhism are read this way but this reader was an extreme example. Overall, I thought the book was helpful in my practice but it is not exemplary.
As a side note, I would definitely not recommend this book to a beginner. The subject is somewhat advanced and would not benefit a reader that lacks a decent understanding of Tibetan Buddhism.
