Having read Tom Brown Jr.'s books on his relationship and learning from an Appache Elder, this book was a bit shallowly written. It discribes only what the Author saw and felt but not any concrete details that would help the reader as Tom Brown's books are more instructional and less superficial. The story is nice from an 'dreamy new age hazy" point of view but if you're looking for something to change your point of view it probably won't be found here. My big problem was the narration. It was overly dramatic and sounded to me like a middle age woman reading breathily trying to affect a 'baby doll' Marilyn Monroe voice at times (not given away in the sound sample where her voice was normal) and their were very odd emphasis which sounded countrary to the words being spoken. I found the listening difficult with her character voices sounding like people with speech problems not culture differences.
It's a good story for teenagers, but narration does not befit the words of the author and is quite distracting if you're in earnest, it would be more suited to a children's book.
I love this book, I have read it before, and wanted to get the audio version. I was appauled by the audio. Nancy Fish is a poor choice for a book based on native Americans. Her portrayal of No-Eyes sounded like an old New York Taxi driver, rather than an old medicine woman. It made this book VERY difficult to listen to.
I really wish this would be re-recorded with a more dynamic reader.
The book itself may be alright, but I have to admit that I can't get in to it based on the narration. It sounds like someone reading to a 2 year old. Very breathy, whiny and overdramatic. You just can't overlook it and get in to the book.
Say something about yourself!
Sorry to say I probably wont LISTEN to it again. I will however read it again and again.
The narration was very disappointing. The voice was like listening to Joan Rivers... I don't like Joan Rivers whiny voice either.
Yes, barring the narrator.
Mary Summer Rain is an amazing woman and writer. And I apologize to her for disliking her choice (?) of narrators. It could have been so much more enjoyable.
Loved the material. But I was disappointed by the narration. Could have gotten someone who sounded less like Joan Rivers. It would have been more enjoyable.
