For Teens?

Incredible story. This book was recommended to me by my 14 year old daughter who read it as part of a school assignment. My daughter told me told me I had to read it because reading this book has completely changed the outlook of her own life and her view of the world. For the first time she realized how lucky she is to have the freedom of growing up as a teenager in the US. She also said most of her friends refuse to read this book after she told them briefly what it was about but she understands the book is not for every 14 year old girl like her but she’s so grateful that Mendee has written her story and is incredibly proud of her bravery. Thank you to the writer for capturing Mendee’s story in such detail that it felt like it was written by her, I cried and couldn’t put it down at times. I hope she has found a good life now.

Astonished

I’m going to make this very brief. This novel is very well written and despite the accent in the audio it gives a better understanding of what’s going on. Which I find Especially important because of the wild events young Mende went through. My understandings on slavery have changed and the over all experience listening to the audio has left me speechless. I highly recommend acquiring this audio book as it will change your whole viewpoint on slavery and just how unreal the situations were!

Sad but True: A Must Listen

We all need to listen to this book to remind us that slavery and FGM (female genital mutilation) still exist today. The story has wonderful, happy parts along with the anguish that is real life. It is a beautifully written and performed story.

Compelling Story

This is an excellent book, with a compelling well written story.
I listened to it on Audible and was afraid to start because I thought it would be too depressing.
It was actually uplifting and a testimony to the resiliency of the human spirit.
Mendez’s story makes me grateful for my own freedom. This book is well worth reading. The narrator was excellent,

Remarkable Story

a moving story that had my heart and soul moved by a remarkably strong woman who faced such atrocities and fought back against her abusers. The fact that so many continue to suffer the same fate makes me want to persue a way to help . Anyone who doesn't believe that slavery still exists today, needs to read this book.

Informative

Very enlightening. The story begs for justice to the people who enslaved Mende. Hard to believe that people are captured and sold as slaves as was done 300 years ago. But it's true.

Very sad what Mende had to endure.

At first the narrator's voice was hard to listen to because of the accent she used. Mainly the major rolling of her Rs . But as the story developed and I got to know Mende, it was as beautiful and as endearing as she is. Her story is heartbreaking yet triumphant. A survivor story hardly worth saying there was a happy ending, but her endurance gives her a badge of honor in my heart. This book is not for the weak at heart as it will pull on your heartstrings to the point of tears. But everyone should read it anyway. It will strengthen your resolve to stand up for those who can't speak for themselves.

A must listen !!!!

This is an incredible story of Mindy taken from her tribe at the young age of 12. The book is descriptive of her sexual abuse but not in such a way that it would be too much for young readers, I will encourage my grandaughter who is 14 to read it so she should give thanks and appreciate the freedom we have in this great country.
The verbal, physical abuse and beatings that she endured were unbelievable.
It is a must read/listen.

Fabulous

I could not stop reading ( listening to), this book! I intended it just for the car, but once I started o couldn’t stop! There are no slow periods at all. From beginning to end you are invested in this young woman’s story. I don’t want to give away any detail, or I’d say more;)
