The narrator for this book is phenomenal. Her expressions are so wonderful and really tell the story. I could not stop listening to the book when I started it and stayed up much too late two nights in a row to find out what happened. Mende's story is unforgettable. She is such a brave woman. Her point is there are many others like her and she wrote the book for them. It was so interesting to hear about her beautiful early days in a tribe of the Nuba mountains. It was terrible to hear when she was made a slave to Arabs. She escaped the ordeal with great courage and wrote this book for other people to know. Listen to it. You will never forget it.
Yes! It so easy to miss little nuances when having to process so many emotions while listening to this type of material.
Realizing how easily slavery is proliferated in so called "civlilized" modern-day society. But, feeling extremely grateful that so many were willing to put their lives on the line to put the situation right!
All of the characters were well read.
No. The book provoked too many emotions to listen to all in one sitting!
If this can take place in the UK, there's nothing to make one believe it doesn't take place in the US.
This is a very sad, but interesting story. I finished it in three days! The narration is amazing, and makes it authentic. Even the life Mende lived before she was captured was very interesting to read! It's worth the credit!
This is a powerful story that I will listen to again and again. The narration is fabulous. I hope a follow-up of Mende's life will be written.
Very enlightening. The story begs for justice to the people who enslaved Mende. Hard to believe that people are captured and sold as slaves as was done 300 years ago. But it's true.
Absolutly amazing and moving story, superbly narrated. Inspires one to make a difference in the world. Highly recommended to everyone.
"difficult to understand"
It took me a while to get used to the very strong accent of the narrator. It waswas nevertheless a moving story
"very good listen"
engrossing sad heartwarming
Mende the girl whom the book was about I loved listening to her story it was so sad but she never gave up hope that someday she would be free again.
No have,nt heard of her before.
I did have a very emotional reaction to this book it made me feel very sad that human beings can treat other human beings in such a callous unfeeling way. But on the other hand some parts of the story were also quite funny and touching.
I really liked the sound of the narrators voice and the feeling she put into the telling of mendes story.
Heart rendering, gives an excellent insight to one woman's plight during the slave era. Hankies at the ready. Would make an excellent film.
I was shocked by this book, particularly as everything happened so recently and it still goes on. It has really opened my eyes to modern-day slavery. This is not to be missed and I strongly recommend everyone to listen to this.
A disturbing account of a young girls enslavement and the brutal and horrific treatment she endured at the hands of the two families who subsequently 'owned' her.
Mende was 12 years old when she was snatched by slavers from her loving family in Sudan. After years of inhuman treatment, she finally ends up working for the family of a diplomat in London. From here she manages to escape and eventally gains asylum.
This raw account should be read as part of the school curriculum, to create awareness of modern day slavery and it's impact on survivors.
Beautifully read - a 'must listen'......
Utterly gripping, mind opening and important. History writes itself by the minute and this is a significant part of today's shocking history - told by it's protagonist in the most heart thumping way. I was so affected by the book that I will soon be meeting the writer so see how I (or rather my favourite club on this earth) can help her.

A very good book got into it and could not put it down
