Publisher's summary

Charlamagne Tha God, New York Times best-selling author of Black Privilege and cohost of Power 105.1’s The Breakfast Club, reveals his blueprint for breaking free from your fears and anxiety to reach that elusive next level of success.

Fear is holding you back. It’s time to turn the tables and channel your fears to actually fuel your success.

Being “shook” is more than a rap lyric for Charlamagne; it’s his mission to overcome. While it may seem like he is ahead of the game and should have nothing to worry about, he is still plagued by anxieties - fear of being weak; fear of being a bad dad; fear of being a worse husband; and, ultimately, fear of failure. Shook One chronicles his journey to beat back those fears and empowers you to no longer be held back from your potential.

Shook One details the ways anxiety has been a driving force in Charlamagne’s life since childhood. For many years, he stressed over what he thought were personal shortcomings: being unpopular in school, potential rejection by women, being ugly, and, worst of all, falling into the life of stagnation or crime that caught up so many of his friends and family in his hometown of Moncks Corner, South Carolina.

Even after achieving national prominence as a radio personality, Charlamagne still found himself paralyzed by thoughts that he wouldn’t be able to take his career to the next level. But now, in Shook One, he is working through these problems with help from mentors, guests on his show, and therapy. He knows therapy and showing weakness are anxiety-producing in the Black community, but this is one of the reasons he wants to own his truth - to clear a path for others in hopes they won’t feel shame while dealing openly with their mental health.

No sophomore slump!!

No sophomore slump!! I'm truly amazed at how much knowledge this man possesses. I just finished after listening all night. I didn't know what to expect because there tends to be a drop off in quality with many author's second book. Not this one!!! He is dropping gems!!! I can't wait for the 3rd one. Continue to live your truth!!!!

LAUGHED.CRIED.MADE A THEARPIST APPT B4 CH. 2

It's a saying when the student is ready "The teacher will appear" I needed this book. Sometimes my anxiety would give my anxiety; anxiety....yeah it was that bad. I never knew it wasn't normal until a group of friends stops talking to me because I was so paranoid. I moved from Cleveland, Ohio to LA and people began to think I was running from the law because I was so paranoid but my true friends just know that how I am. This book has changed my perception of that completely. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted and I can begin to work on my mental help and get better. Thank you, Thank you Thank you!!!!!
By chapter 2, I had already laughed out loud at work, cried and set a date to see a therapist.

Too Vulgar

I did not like the bad language used and the sex references. The text was way too vulgar. I learned a lot and he spoke honest truth about his story and is a good writer and speaker. I just would not have purchased if I knew it was going to cross the line on the language and the x rated stories with his wife in the beginning. I like to listen to audible while driving with my kid in the car. You definitely can’t do that with this book. I had to stop listening. Sorry. Wish I could get my credit back. I know this book will help a lot of people who don’t need to worry about vulgar words being used or having a private moment with a wife being shared. I’m just in a different bracket of people as a mom who has a child that will ask a ton of questions.

#ForTheCulture

I’m a new Therapist and absolutely LOVED this book! In addition to how well written it is, I love how Charlemagne was able to describe his anxiety and experiences in therapy in a way that can easily be understood by people with no concept of what mental health and mental illness is. I also loved the clinical correlations which really help drive home Charlamagne’s point in how real mental issues are and WHY they are an issue. Overall, I have nothing but good things to say about this book. I will definitely be recommending it to everyone I know. LOL!!

Terrible

I decided to read this based on the reviews it got from Elvis Duran on Z100. Ive been listening to that station for years and whenever they make a recommendation I like to look into it further because its usually great. From the name of the book, I was expecting something that talked about anxiety, and while Charlamagne did speak of his life experiences with it, I felt the book was very anti-white which I did not like. He talks about how whites have been racist for years when really I get the sense that he himself is racist. Don't waste your money unless you want to hear an overpayed former crack dealer complain about the "white devil" as he likes to refer to whites as.

Don’t Buy

Getting through this book was so hard. I thought it was a book about a mans story on Anxiety but it’s not. The author talks about anxiety but it’s mostly random rants. There is no proper order to this book. There are also a lot of times when he brags about how successful he is. He might be successful but I had never heard of him. He talks a lot about things that have nothing to do with anxiety like politics. Trust me and do not buy this book you will thank me.
