Seal of God | [Chad Williams, David Thomas]

Seal of God

Just days before Chad Williams was scheduled to report for basic training at the Great Lakes naval base, he turned on the television and was greeted with the horrifying image of his mentor and training partner, US Navy SEAL Scott Helvenston, being brutally murdered in a premeditated ambush on the streets of Fallujah, Iraq. Steeled in his resolve, Chad committed himself to completing the US military’s most difficult training to become a Navy SEAL - and avenge his friend’s death.

Publisher's Summary

"There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for one's friends." (John 15:13)

One of only 13 out of a class of 173 to make it straight through to graduation, Chad went on to serve on SEAL Teams 1 and 7, completing tours of duty in the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and finally Iraq. There, Chad’s journey came full circle when his team was ambushed by enemy machine gunners - close to the same road where his hero had been killed five years earlier.

SEAL of God follows Chad’s extraordinary journey through 25 grueling weeks of BUD/S training and onto the hostile streets of Al Anbar Province, Iraq, where he witnessed the horrors of war up close. Along the way, Chad shares his own radical conversion story and discovers the true meaning of ultimate sacrifice.

"from professional skate boarder to SEAL"

First, I'm not sure why reviewer Tim was surprised at the Christian aspect of this book since God is in the title. Anyway, It was interesting to see this guy go from professional skate boarder, and stoner to a SEAL. I wanted to cry over the sweet friendship/mentor/mentee relationship with Scott Helvenston (former SEAL and Blackwater contractor killed in Iraq). There were also funny parts from his childhood such as a bad run-in with a homemade 'rocket' made with a paper towel tube.

There's a lot of technical information such as he goes into detail about diving equipment, technique and firearms.

I didn't expect the narration of be A+ since this is narrated by the author, but it gives the audiobook a more personal feel.

"A personal and very honest introspection"

Chad Williams boldly holds nothing back... except for the expletives of his instructors, fellow candidates and colleagues in the Seals.

This story is an exceptional witness of living as a Christian in a very tough environment. I found the story very encouraging and recommend reading this if you have any testosterone flowing through your veins.

I love suspense, murder mysteries, psycho thriller books most of all! I listen when not taking classes for my masters degree.

    "LOVE IT!"

I have learned more about the Navy SEAL's and their exhaustive training reading this book than doing any kind of research online. Chad's first had account of what he had to endure during training made me feel as if I was there going through it myself and his personal story of salvation is just as gripping.

    "Pretty good"

The author/narrator was a little dull, a professional, more captivating narrator would've made the story better. Aside from epigraphs verses in the first half of the book there was only what he was before he became a Christian, the title of the book only took off halfway through.

    "I was there"
Where does Seal of God rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

What a cool story about life. Why is it that the kids that hate authority the most always seem to want to go into the toughest of the military. This is a great read that is read by the author. I really enjoyed the story and could relate to the changes and trials in his life.

What other book might you compare Seal of God to and why?

No Easy Day, Many of the same issues and experiences

Which character – as performed by Chad Williams – was your favorite?

    Chad Williams

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Would have if I could have. I listen in the car and got to my destination too soon.

What disappointed you about Seal of God?

The narration turn me off the book and the summary leads you to believe it's about something else.

    "A story about god"
What disappointed you about Seal of God?

He talked non stop about god. Not what I wanted to have crammed down my throat.

Would you ever listen to anything by Chad Williams and David Thomas again?

    No

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Chad Williams?

    No

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    Nope

    Any additional comments?

Not what I was looking for. It may be a great book to the correct audience. I however was not the audience..... Or maybe the point of the book was to spread the good word to people like me....

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Don't try to convert the reader to your god.

What could Chad Williams and David Thomas have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

First third was weird, but okay.
    Should have stopped there.

Did Chad Williams do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

    No.

    Any additional comments?

    Don't not read......
The only book from Audible, since 2001, that I could not finsh.
    It was just that bad.

    "Not what I was expecting"

I thought this book was along the lines of American Sniper, Lone Survivor but that was not the case. The main focus was religion and finding religion rather than SEAL training and operations. Chad describes some interesting hell raising when younger but I felt the book didn't heat up, end the way I was expecting or focus enough on the Teams.
