Publisher's summary

After the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, Susannah Charleson was so impressed by the newspaper photo of an exhausted handler and his search-and-rescue dog that she decided to train a dog of her own. A dog lover and pilot with search experience herself, Charleson got Puzzle, a strong, bright Golden Retriever, who from the start, exhibited a unique aptitude for search-and-rescue work. But the puppy’s willfulness challenged even Susannah, who had raised dogs for years.

Scent of the Missing is the story of Susannah and Puzzle’s adventures and the complex relationship they forge as they help in the pursuit and recovery of people who have fallen prey to crime, misadventure, or catastrophe: a missing teenager, an Alzheimer’s patient wandering in the cold, signs of the crew amid the debris of the space shuttle Columbia disaster.

For any lover of dogs...

If you could sum up Scent of the Missing in three words, what would they be?

Interesting. Informative. Uplifting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The dog!

What about Susannah Charleson’s performance did you like?

Nothing that stands out - she simply did justice to the story and was easy to listen to. Often I listen while in high noise environs, and this performance made the cut.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Best audio book I've heard--and I've heard a lot!

Where does Scent of the Missing rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a wonderful book full of stories about dogs and their humans, people and their lost loved ones, details about what goes into the hard work of training Search and Rescue dogs.

Susannah is a terrific writer, and a great reader, and every so often you can hear the Texas in her voice, which I liked.

Beautiful story

BeAutiful book. This is a great book for all to have. What research and rescue teams with dogs go through. The author and reader were great. Can't wait to see more. I felt like I was a part of everything going on.

Beautifully written and narrated

Not the first I’ve listened to regarding K-9 or SARs but definitely the most personal and touching. She gave a more live and “walk with me” account of the path taken and the Challenger experience was humbling.

Wonderful sharing story.

Thank you

I've always wanted to understand more about SAR dogs, other than the vests they wear and how important they are in specific instances. I so appreciate this author and the lovely way she wrote about her favorite subject. I now know so much more than I did before! Thank you, Susannah!

A Must Read for dog lovers!

This is fascinating stuff, and the author narrates beautifully. Someday I shall name a dog Puzzle (the star of this true story.) I've listened to this book, and her next two, countless times. It never gets old! Great family listening, fine for kids.

Any additional comments?

Enjoyed learning more about Search and Rescue. Really enjoyed picking up ideas for how I can teach useful skills to future pets. Appreciated the positive reviews and importance to adopt, spay and neuter...and how very important it is to find a reputable breeder if someone is set on a particular breed. ...But dog/cat rescue is always better!
