Publisher's summary

On April 6, 2003, 26 Green Berets, including those of Sergeant First Class Frank Antenori's Special Forces A-Team (call sign Roughneck Nine One), fought a vastly superior force at a remote crossroads near the village of Debecka, Iraq. The enemy unit had battle tanks and 150 well-trained, well-equipped, and well-commanded soldiers. The Green Berets stopped the enemy advance, then fought them until only a handful of Iraqi survivors finally fled the battlefield.

In the process, the Nine One encountered hordes of members of the news media. And at the peak of the fight, a US Navy F-14 dropped a 500-pound bomb into the middle of a group of supporting Kurdish Peshmerga fighters, killing and wounding dozens.

Roughneck Nine One is the never-before-told, unsanitized story of the fight for the crossroads at Debecka, and a unique inside look at a Special Forces A-team as it recruits and organizes, trains for combat, and eventually fights a battle against a huge opposing force.

Respect for 91 and company

I have much respect for the author and his brothers. They demonstrated uncommon valor. May those who survived live to forget the worst moments and take pride in their best.

Great book! What you would expect from SF.

I did not want to quit the story. The author puts you in the story. SF performed exactly as I believed they would.

Simply Outstanding

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

A definite recommendation! The story is excellent. If you have any military background, you'll recognize the reality in the details, and the narration is the best I've ever heard. Outstanding!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Roughneck Nine-One?

When they realized that they were facing tanks and had to make tracks. Well told!

Have you listened to any of Patrick Lawlor’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but I will look for him on others.

What’s the most interesting tidbit you’ve picked up from this book?

It was ingesting to find that even outcasts like Green Berets have their outcasts, and their independence usually results in outcomes that the conventional military cannot conceive.

Any additional comments?

Did I mention that it was outstanding?

Feb 2023: If you listen to this book, remember that these events happened about 20 yrs ago. The javelin missile system was “new” at that time and they didn’t have all of today’s modern tech. That puts into perspective what these guys accomplished during the battle that is the ultimate focus of the book.

The story includes an interesting look at the leadership dynamic within special forces - an aspect that I have not found in other books related to special operations. In general it was just a good story too.

Do I recommend the book? Yes.
