Publisher's summary

For almost two decades, Dayna Steele ruled the airwaves as "Houston's First Lady of Radio." Now she shares her backstage adventures, celebrity escapades, and the secrets that she took from it all to create several successful businesses. Listen to Dayna tell the stories in her own voice with help from the late radio talent Crash Collins.

Foreword by Gene Simmons as read by Crash Collins

Sammy Hagar (Montrose, Van Halen, The Wabos) I never went through Houston without a trip to see Dayna. She was as much a part of Texas rock and roll as any musician. Fortunately, she has only told half the stories in this book!

Paul Begala, CNN correspondent and former White House official Dayna Steele is smart and funny and on the cutting edge. She's learned a lot from the business of rock, and her observations can rock your business.

Louis Messina, concert promoter The Queen of Houston radio! Back when radio was entertainment and stations had a personality of their own, Dayna ruled the airwaves. She helped put Houston on the rock-and-roll map and made my job fun. I mean that in the most G-rated way!

A must read for any band or business person

Would you listen to Rock to the Top again? Why?

Rock to the Top really took my by surprise at the solid advice that Dayna was dishing out. Though listening to it now, in 2014, some of the parts might be a bit dated, the point and advice is not. I think every effective leader needs to review what's important to them every now and then, and the principles put forth in Dayna's book are solid, and entertaining to listen to at the same time.

What did you like best about this story?

I know I'm somewhat biased in my review because I grew up listening to 101 KLOL and Dayna Steele. What I didn't know was all of the work and professionalism that went into making their shows so good. Looking back, I can clearly see how much more professional their radio station was compared to the others in town. The work principles that were put into place by the staff came through in their shows and live events. Dayna clearly outlines that, though you might be in the rock and roll business, its still business and you have to manage it and yourself. Success takes work whether you're playing a guitar or building a company.

What does Dayna Steele bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

It's really quite remarkable the relationships Dayna was able to build with world reknown rock stars while just being a local DJ in Houston. And it's clear in the book how much they appreciate her and her professionalism. You don't build relationships like that without sincerety and work. This book tells you how to do that.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I wanted to listen to the book as quickly as I could, but at the same time, I didn't want it to end either. It was good to hear the voices from so long ago and that's why I particularly liked the audio version of the book. It brought back a lot of good memories.
