Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential: This collection of short radio addresses written and read by Ronald Reagan demonstrate why, as President, he was called "the great communicator". His clear and straight-forward manner, his empathy for ordinary people, and his personal warmth come across loud and clear. These pre-presidency talks reveal many of the ideas and themes that made Reagan so popular as president. Adding context to the radio addresses are Nancy Reagan, George Schultz, and others from Reagan's inner circle. — Beth Anderson

Publisher's summary

From 1975 to 1979 Ronald Reagan gave more than 1,000 daily radio broadcasts, the great majority of which he wrote himself. This program represents the opening of a major archive of pre-presidential material from the Reagan Library and the Hoover Institution Archives. These addresses transform our image of Ronald Reagan, and enhance and revise our understanding of the late 1970s - a time when Reagan held no political office, but was nonetheless mapping out a strategy to transform the economy, end the Cold War, and create a vision of America that would propel him to the presidency.

These radio programs demonstrate that Reagan had carefully considered nearly every issue he would face as president. Reagan's radio broadcasts would change his reputation even among his closest friends and allies. Here, in his own voice, Reagan the thinker is finally fully revealed.

Reagan's radio addresses are introduced by George Schultz and feature additional introductions by Nancy Reagan, Richard V. Allen, Judge William Clark, Michael Deaver, Peter Hannaford, Edwin Meese III and Harry O'Connor.

A Statesman as a Man a Politician as a President.

He has what hindsight can only call a sense of the future.

Listen to this and just give him a chance, see what he says and check out how the Campaign and administrative policies of Clinton, Gore, and Yes the Bushes were influenced by things that Regan foresaw.

Probably all of these guys, from Clinton to Bush have statesman like qualities, but realpolitik turns them into politicians, you whining mr american? Blame yourself.

Libertarian in the White House? Almost

One thing emerges as quite fascinating when listening to this book. Reagan truly did have a philosophy that he questioned, reasoned, and honed during these radio years. By the time he got to the White House--he already knew what he believed.

I was more intrigued by the selections that featured his political and philosophical reasoning. There are an awful lot of touchy / feely segments included in this set. They are fine, but the political reasoning he has is more interesting and unusual.

As good as apple pie

You just can't get any better than this.
This is a series of numerous radio broadcast intertwined with a few very small 15-45 second intro'd by the people the closest to the president.

We lost a lot when we lost President Reagan. Men like him and Andy Griffith helped make my generation better. Men with character, value and integrity! Enjoy

for those who love the gipper

My neice recommended this to my brother and I as one of her professors helped with the compalation, and I am glad that is all they did. This is a collection of Reagan's radio addresses, assembeled with only minor commentary between. I am so glad that this close to his life the publishers did not try to tell those who may have heard these live of the context. If you like his story telling, you will love this audio presentation.

Presidential Perfection

These radio addresses have intrinsic value in history. The recordings show a down to earth president with a love for America that is NOT seen in the politicians of today. Thank you Ronald Reagan.

Incredible insights to an incredible man!

This is an absolutely fascinating title! There is nothing like listening to Ronald Reagan's own distinctive voice giving life to his views and announcing to the nation--well before he became president--exactly what he believes and the views he will promote when he does attain that office. Hindsight is 20/20, but anybody who heard these radio segments before Mr. Reagan became president would have had 20/20 foresight as well. My already substantial respect for this great man increased fourfold after hearing this title!

As Significant Now As It Was Then

What a wonderful collection of Ronald Reagan's radio programs. Naturally, by virtue of passing time, some of the subject matter is dated. But the ideas, and many of his solutions are as significant now as they were then.

Reagan's views and philosophies are such a breath of fresh air and truly strengthened my conservative resolve. He was loved and respected, and one listen will show you why.

I was truly amazed to find that he wrote virtually all his talks and speeches.

This is a book I highly recommend. When you listen you will know that you are listening to a voice for all time.

I only wish it were longer!

This is a wonderful window into the mind of Ronald Reagan during the interval between his time as Governor of California and his run for the Presidency in 1980. Since all the addresses were written by him with no ghost writing or editing by staffers, you get the "real stuff" - the authentic Ronald Reagan, speaking on a wide range of topics, from the Cold War to the loneliness of travel on the road. He had such a wonderful speaking voice, and these three-minute gems were so good, I just wish there were more of them here. (The commentary by former staff members was very insightful, however, and is certainly not "filler.")

You will find that, had you listened to these little speeches in the last half of the 1970s, you would have known exactly how Reagan would behave as President - he laid out, carefully and with great clarity of thought, what he believed about American exceptionalism, the growth of the the Federal government, international relations, abortion, personal courage, and a host of other topics. This recording shows you a wise, principled, articulate man. If you were a fan of Reagan before, you will be more so after listening; if you weren't, you will be amazed at how wrong you were in your beliefs. I cannot recommend this audiobook more highly. The regular audio CD version is apparently out of print; get it in the downloadable version. Tell your friends to get it...and better yet, get it for your children and grandchildren, so they can know what kind of dreams Americans can have and how they can make them come true.
