Publisher's summary

A stunning look at World War II from the other side.... From the turret of a German tank, Colonel Hans von Luck commanded Rommel's 7th and then 21st Panzer Division. El Alamein, Kasserine Pass, Poland, Belgium, Normandy on D-Day, the disastrous Russian front - von Luck fought there with some of the best soldiers in the world. German soldiers. Awarded the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross, von Luck writes as an officer and a gentleman. Told with the vivid detail of an impassioned eyewitness, his rare and moving memoir has become a classic in the literature of World War II, a first-person chronicle of the glory - and the inevitable tragedy - of a superb soldier fighting Hitler's war.

Amazing life

Author did a wonderful job of teaching us the value of character & honor. The book is very readable for a memoir. VonLuck's accounts of the war spur new interest in the people & places involved in all sides of the war.

Different Perspective on the War

Where does Panzer Commander rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

One of the better biographies out there that really provided a different perspective on the war from a German soldiers point of view.

What did you like best about this story?

Finding out about how the German soldier lived and experienced. I really didn't know of the hardships that were imposed by the Russians after the war in the hard labor camps and that was really eye opening.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

The title of this book says it all.

Any additional comments?

It just offers a really good perspective that we don't often get to learn about as Americans and in our history classes. I listened to the "Last Battle" about the fall of Berlin by Cornelius Ryan and this offered some good addition perspective on that as well because it was also Hans' last battle of the war until imprisoned in Russia after the war.

must read for all history buffs!!!

Any additional comments?

amazing story of a soldier who didn't really believe in all of the Nazi's ideals and was simply doing his duty as a professional soldier. interesting to hear the happenings behind the german lines. the narrator is absolutely brilliant. he delivers the story with much emotion and the accents add so much to the story. it was as if hans von luck was reading his own story. this is a must listen!!!

A must listen for any student...

Casual or serious of WW II. Self-effacing and reflective, this remarkable man and warrior humanizes the inhumanity of the conflict. . Not just a War Memoir, but the story of us all. As an old soldier, I found the Post war reunions most poignant. Superior narration by Bronson Pinchot. Highly recommended!

Narration Makes this audible book Priceless

An important biography that belongs in schools and libraries in the U.S., but only as this marvelous Audible book that makes history come alive with Pinchot's perfect narration. Found reading the book boring, but I learned so much from this audio version.

Amazing life of a gentleman warrior

Where does Panzer Commander rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Three great take-aways - First, you get to see the other side of the war ... most WWII books are all from the Allied perspective. Second, you get to see the difference between soldiers and Nazi occupiers ... spoiler alert, they are not the same! Third, you get to see first hand how civility plays a role in war. All in all, a great read.

Finally !!!!!!!!

This IS what I've been looking for for years! I always have the picture from the USA said! I always wonder how was Hittler able to do this!? I wanted to know what was the story from the other side! Well Mr Hanz von Luck said it all! Amazing story! I love it! This should be in all schools! Same as the book "A higher call".
Man is basically good! Remember that!!!!!!

other side of the war

What did you love best about Panzer Commander?

this was an excellent tour of WW2 with great insights into the relationship between
the actual battlefield commanders on German,-British and American sides. Great book to read after one of the Ambrose WW2 books.
