Publisher's summary

The real-life Alex Vause from the critically acclaimed, top-rated Netflix show Orange Is the New Black tells her story in her own words for the first time - a powerful, surprising memoir about crime and punishment, friendship and marriage, and a life caught in the ruinous drug trade and beyond.

Fans nationwide have fallen in love with Orange Is the New Black, the critically acclaimed and wildly popular Netflix show based on Piper Kerman's sensational number-one New York Times best seller. Now, Catherine Cleary Wolters - the inspiration for Alex Vause, Piper's ex-girlfriend, friend, and sometimes-romantic partner on the show - tells her true story, offering details and insights that fill in the blanks, set the record straight, and answer common fan questions.

An insightful, frustrating, heartbreaking, and uplifting analysis of crime and punishment in our times, Out of Orange is an intimate look at international drug crime - a seemingly glamorous lifestyle that dazzles unsuspecting young women and eventually leads them to the seedy world of prison. Told by a woman originally thrust into the spotlight without her permission - Wolters learned about Piper's memoir in the media - Out of Orange chronicles Wolters' time in the drug trade, her incarceration, her friendships and acquaintances with odd cellmates, her two marriages, and her complicated relationship with Piper. But Wolters is not solely defined by her past; she also reflects on her life and the person she is today.

Filled with colorful characters; fascinating tales; painful, sobering lessons; and hard-earned wisdom, Out of Orange is sure to be provocative, entertaining, and ultimately inspiring.

Must read for OITNB fans

And everyone else for that matter. I was totally enthralled by Piper Kerman's book, and proceeded to become equally obsessed with the show.

Consequently I was always most curious about the "Alex/Nora" character. Who was this woman? I totally admit to being one of those people early on, frantically googling "the real Alex Vause."

Finally we get to find out, and what a story. Fully engaging and entertaining- but at the same time, shining a much needed spotlight on our monstrously corrupt "justice" and prison systems.

We finally get our answers, we get a phenomenal story, and we also get a real wake up call. Piper Kerman is doing good work in the area of prison reform, and calling attention to the huge, huge miscarriages of justice, unfair sentencing practices and subhuman treatment of inmates that occurs on a daily basis. But a couple people are not enough. This is an issue that can touch ALL of us- and more easily than you would think. Something has to be done if this country is going to maintain its fast-fraying reputation as a "free country."

Big credit to Ms. Wolters for surviving what she did, and she's proven to be a fine writer. I hope people pay attention to this book.

Enough with with the cats !!!!!!!!

First I am glad that it seems Cleary has gotten her life back and is doing well. Also let me say that I love all animals . But this book should have been two books , one about the story I purchased this book for and the other about stories of cats! I almost gave up on it a number of times because of the amount of time spent talking about cats ! ENOUGH !!!!

Great listening!

The book was written with clarity and humor.
While the her drug currier involvement was off putting, I thoroughly was captivated by Wolters
honesty.

Fast moving !

I've really enjoyed the "Orange is the New Black" book and Netflix series. I wasn't sure how this book would compare. I thought it might be a copycat of the original work. I was pleasantly surprised that this was the other side of the story and continued to show the daily strife and struggle of women in prison. Well done!

5/5

Cleary is a very talented author and Barbara did an amazing job reading her story. Between the two I was completely drawn into the telling of Cleary's felon/prison days. It was brave of her to put her story out and I can really respect that. It was very interesting learning about the life behind a person who transports drugs and the workings of the prison system. It broke my heart at the part of her book where she tells of her fathers death. It was such a sweet phone call that she had with her dad and her words of his laughter at the end made me both sad and happy. I'm glad she was able to talk to him tho it was awful that they couldnt make it to see him in time. I'm glad that Cleary made it through all of that and has grown so much. More people should really tell their stories.

Animal cruelty

Warning: There is one instance of animal cruelty in the book that was so awful to me I almost had to stop running

Better than Piper’s book

I listened to Piper’s book and then this one (primarily to get more detail on the crimes). Cleary is a much more likable person. We get to really know all about her. Her relationship with her partners was so sweet, her relationships with her lovers were touching, and her love for her cats was absolutely endearing. The story about Patches is something I’ll laugh about for a long time. This book is written well (except some of the details about the logistics of moving mules & escorts around were a little confusing). It was hard to put down.

Another point of view

Another point of view added balance and perspective to the Piper point of view - the details about how they got tangled up in trafficking was interesting.

Fun listen

It was nice hearing the other side of the story. The narator was ok and fun to hear in the beginning. However I soon learned that she emphasized most sentences the same. It was still a fun listen for a long car ride. Great content!! Thanks Cleary!!

ORANGE FANS LISTEN TO THIS!

I assumed she would be bitter and tell a different tale. I am so impressed with hearing her honest account of her version of this story. So fun how it starts out at the height of ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK craze and works it way back. I hope you are doing well now Cleary Wolters I enjoyed getting to know you!!!!
