Publisher's summary

Following up on her international best seller The Zookeeper's Wife, Diane Ackerman tells the breathtaking story of the stroke that deprived her husband, Paul West - a distinguished novelist and poet - of every scrap of language beyond the syllable "mem". In her characteristically glorious prose, Ackerman weaves together the latest science on stroke and the brain’s ability to store and process language with her intensely personal journey as caregiver in helping Paul to an extraordinary recovery, and the impact of all this on their decades-long marriage.

Beautiful story of love and endurance

I recommend this book to anyone who wants to believe in the power of enduring love and anyone who wants to understand some of what a stroke can do to an individual’s brain. Love can overcome so many obstacles and save someone from the darkness (in this case after a stroke and an inability to communicate for someone who loves words and expression). The beautiful twists and turns the author’s backstory provides of their love was interwoven so perfectly with the challenges and sadnesses of change. Love evolves with the relationship and gives hope that someone can remain true even in the toughest of circumstances. The entire book is phrased and describes every feeling so perfectly that you become immersed and can imagine yourself in their circumstances. One of my favorite books ever.

So supportive

This is a good read for any spouse of a stroke/TBI patient. Appreciated her ability to convey how to BE and LIVE simply while healing.
