Publisher's summary

Welcome to the hilarious, strange, elegiac, outrageous world of David Sedaris. In Naked, Sedaris turns the current mania for the memoir on its proverbial ear, mining the exceedingly rich terrain of his life, his family, and his unique worldview, a sensibility at once take-no-prisoners sharp and deeply charitable. A tart-tongued mother does dead-on imitations of her young son's nervous tics, to the great amusement of his teachers; a stint of Kerouackian wandering is undertaken (of course!) with a quadriplegic companion. Through it all is Sedaris's unmistakable voice, without a doubt one of the freshest in American writing.

Critic reviews

"Sidesplitting." (The New York Times Book Review)
"Genuinely funny, at times hilarious....Makes for a smashing use of audio as a unique entertainment medium....Highly likable and spirited throughout...makes a case for audio as its own special form." (Publishers Weekly)
"Sedaris is a gifted satirist with an uncanny knack for re-creating dialogue and revealing fantasies....Brutally honest and brilliantly eloquent, Sedaris is positively tonic." (Booklist)

Satisfying Sedaris Essays, but Fewer Belly Laughs

Would you listen to Naked again? Why?

No. Good listen once, but more serious material than usual.

What did you like best about this story?

The interweaving of dialogue as performed by Sedaris and his sister.

What about David Sedaris and Amy Sedaris ’s performance did you like?

I usually prefer listening to David solo, but use of Amy's voice really enhanced these essays.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Don't want to be a spoiler, but there more bittersweet moments in these tales than David generally delivers.

David Sedaris never fails to entertain!

I read the book years ago and just as entertaining and fun to listen to on the road.

Honest & Sincere

This is a collection of brutally honest autobiographical stories of David Sedaris' upbrining and life. We sometimes found ourselves wincing at his childhood accounts and then laughing the next moment at the author's way of finding the wry humor in otherwise disturbing events. My husband and I would look at each other and say, "Jeez, we thought OUR families were crazy. They were Ozzy and Harriet compared to this guy's family!" As always, his tales are sincere and humorous and perfectly delivered.

Naked

I didn't think this book was as entertaining as others by the author. It was surprising to hear his sister's invollment.

Funny!

My daughter loved this! She is now a confirmed David Sedaris fan. She was waiting to pick me up at an airport. The flight was delayed almost 2 hours and she didn't mind, she was laughing so much.

A terrific book

I never tire of David Sedaris, and have a lot to catch up on as I move through his books. I use them sometimes as teaching tools, too. I was held still by the narrative of Sedaris sharing intimate parts of his early development and family and his early adult life. I loved Naked, laughed and teared up at various times. Amy Sedaris’s masterful character portrayals delighted me. Quite the sibling force, these two.
