On June 5, 2002, 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart, the daughter of a close-knit Mormon family, was taken from her home in the middle of the night by religious fanatic Brian David Mitchell and his wife, Wanda Barzee. She was kept chained, dressed in disguise, repeatedly raped, and told she and her family would be killed if she tried to escape. After her rescue on March 12, 2003, she rejoined her family and worked to pick up the pieces of her life.
Now for the first time, in her memoir, My Story, she tells of the constant fear she endured every hour, her courageous determination to maintain hope, and how she devised a plan to manipulate her captors and convinced them to return to Utah, where she was rescued minutes after arriving. Smart explains how her faith helped her stay sane in the midst of a nightmare and how she found the strength to confront her captors at their trial and see that justice was served.
In the nine years after her rescue, Smart transformed from victim to advocate, traveling the country and working to educate, inspire and foster change. She has created a foundation to help prevent crimes against children and is a frequent public speaker. In 2012, she married Matthew Gilmour, whom she met doing mission work in Paris for her church, in a fairy tale wedding that made the cover of People magazine.

Best Book Ever!
Would you listen to My Story again? Why?
This was one of the best books I have ever read (via audio!). Elizabeth Smart tells her story that leaves you inspired and not feeling sorry for her. She has an elegant way of telling her tale without it being too disturbing. Instead of focusing on the really bad things she has a way of explaining her ordeal and focusing on things that you would never imagine, which is what I think makes this story so good. I often go back to some of the chapters .... whether you are Mormon or any other religion, she offers some inspiring words to move forward in life in general!

Listening to this book makes me realize my life isn’t so bad. Poor Elizabeth went through hell and compared to the life I live it helps me see things in a better perspective. My life isn’t so bad and listening to this book helps me see that. Elizabeth deserves the best in life. I love her.

Powerful!
Elizabeth Smart is an incredible woman who shares her story in a profound way. Not only does she detail the account of her abduction, she shares insights into her story of healing. It is amazing to me that while she was taken by a man who claimed religious dominance, she never turned her back on God. In fact, she says she felt watched over by Him.
The parts I found most touching are when she talked about her Grandfather and not letting her abductors steal another minute of her life. What an incredible perspective.
