Most people know Penny Marshall as the director of Big and A League of Their Own. What they don’t know is her trailblazing career was a happy accident. In this funny and intimate memoir, Penny takes us from the stage of The Jackie Gleason Show in 1955 to Hollywood’s star-studded sets, offering up some hilarious detours along the way.
My Mother Was Nuts is an intimate backstage pass to Penny’s personal life, her breakout role on The Odd Couple, her exploits with Cindy Williams and John Belushi, and her travels across Europe with Art Garfunkel on the back of a motorcycle. We see Penny get married. And divorced. And married again (the second time to Rob Reiner). We meet a young Carrie Fisher, whose close friendship with Penny has spanned decades. And we see Penny at work with Tom Hanks, Mark Wahlberg, Whoopi Goldberg, Robert De Niro, and Whitney Houston.
Throughout it all, from her childhood spent tap dancing in the Bronx, to her rise as the star of Laverne & Shirley, Penny lived by simple rules: “try hard, help your friends, don’t get too crazy, and have fun.” With humor and heart, My Mother Was Nuts reveals there’s no one else quite like Penny Marshall.

As far as comedy based, it was the first and it motivated me to buy more because it was so good.
Billy Cystals's Stll Foolin' 'Em. Marshal's too was laugh out loud funny but also had some very touching moments as well.. She has a similar positive way of viewing difficult life experiences.
Her authentic, natural voice.
Yes, when her and her brother funded a dance program/studio at a university bearing her mother's name.
I was going through a rough time in my life and thought maybe I should listen to books by strong successful woman to get my brain back in the game. This was one of many and by far my favorite. Besides the fact that she has that awesome accent that I literally can listen to all day, she has lead an amazing life. Great story, totally inspiring and vo-dee-oh-doe-doe.

When she reunited a currently feuding Simon & Garfunkel with an awkward request for a living room concert.
Tripping on acid and calling Gary for help.
When she spoke about her mother passing.
It's so rare that an author reads their own audio book and I wish more did. After listening and reliving this book with Penny you will see why Penny being ABOUT THE WORK had to do it herself. A true gem of a person and I am so grateful she did this.
I listen to some very sad books about things in history...this was just what I was looking for to give my mind and my heart a rest from the sorrow and pain...
I lived my life as I saw best...

It was so funny and very interesting.
I love the way Penny Marshall read her book. She could put her own feelings and emotions into the book
Hum? I liked when she discussed the making of Big.
It made me laugh.
Listening to Penny Marshall read this book is like listening to a friend (albiet from the New York part of the country) talk to you. Don't expect a slick read. That isn't this book and I dont think that that is Ms. Marshall. Sometimes fast. Sometime gravily. All the time Bronx.
The example she displayed in her support of the NYC firefighters (as well as NYC itself) after 9-11.
Her. If I read the book I would be hearing my voice, my pauses, my emotion .. not hers. Her reading is classic Laverne.
I usually read history books so this book was a stretch for me. I had an extra credit so "what the heck" I thought. I remembered enjoying her tv show, so why not buy the book.
In a way this was a history lesson of sorts. The people she has known; the relationships and loyalty she extended to so many and the way she lived her chronicled 4 decades made me think that her life is indeed a well lived one.
Unlike a lot of public figures, I think she has shown us thru her book that working hard and being responsible and respectful - done with a good dose of honesty and humor -that life ends up working out. Maybe her mama wasn't all that nuts .......
I have not read the book as reading puts me to sleep.
Hearing all her interactions with other stars.
I love her accent.
I think Penny is refreshing and truthful. I don't think her mom was nuts just a little eccentric.
This book made me laugh and that is good for you. I couldn't wait to get back to listening to Penny moderate.
YES YES YES! So much fun really i almost peed myself. that was on the first chapter.
How everyone is crazy in the most magical kind of way.
Every chapter it would be imposable to pick just one. I do want to be one of her friends who come to visit and stay for years at a time.
GO PEE BEFORE YO SEE THIS MOVIE!!
I love this book!
Penny Marshall keeps your attention throughout this book. It took me a little while to get used to her accent. Those of us on the West Coast don't have one! Penny is so honest with the good and the bad - so transparent. What an incredible life she's had so far. Any thing she decides to do, she's done well. Loyal to a fault to her friends, family and the projects she's involved with. What a work ethic she has! Read or listen to her book, you won't be able to put it down.
