Publisher's summary

There have been many Marines. There have been many marksmen. But there has been only one Sergeant Carlos Hathcock, a legend of Marine lore. He stalked the Viet Cong behind enemy lines. His record has never been matched: 93 confirmed kills. This is his story. Powerful, chilling, and all true.

Just Wow

Doubtful we’d have ever had a Chris Kyle is not for a Carlos Hancock. Unfortunately too much of the contribution our Vietnam bets made to our country is overshadowed by the stigma of that war. This book is a shining moment that honors one many who saw his contribution as a service to his country, a contribution still paying dividends more than 50 years later.

Great story...but..

This was a very good story about a very interesting man. Another military hero from the backwoods of Arkansas (another is documented in the book "fearless" which is a better book fyi). Carlos was the best, and his story needs told. The problem I had with this book was the narrator. His voice is okay, but when he does the dialogue portions (of which there are far to many) he lessens the impact. He makes Carlos sound like Gomer Pyle. I lived in Mississippi and Louisiana so I know accents. The interviews online show him to be an intelligent introvert with calculated precision, who chooses his words carefully. Yes he did have a bit of an accent, but nothing like the voice in the audio book. I felt like I was listening to a book written for the 12-13 year old Southern teenager demographic. The book was heavy on dialogue, much of which was superfluous. I could have done with more details and history, letting my imagination fill in the rest. But that's a quibble, the author was evenhanded and compitant. I did at times find myself drawn into the story. I'll have to assume the written word or a better narrator would improve this book dramatically. If you're like me and you don't have the time to read everything, then this audio version will do. I listened straight through and would recommend it but.. it could have been better. note* I hate to complain in this review, but I assume they need feedback in order to better the audio format.

Great story.

This is one of those books that as time goes on, I'm sure I will be listening to this book again. I can't say that about many audio books.

A Marine's opinion.

very good story, with a hard to listen to point, as a Marine. Yet it ends well.

I didn’t want the book to end!

Amazing story. I quickly felt like Carlos Hatcock was part of the family and a close friend. I found myself worrying about him and dreading the end of the book. I loved the story and it was well narrated.

Great book and a great listen!

I read the book years ago and enjoyed it thoroughly, and just listened to it on audio, and enjoyed it once again! Truly a great account of an American hero. Thank you Carlos, and all servicemen for your service.

Interesting voice changes

Loved the book, the narration was good just a little weird when changing voices, especially from Carlos to Jo.
