Publisher's Summary

The best-selling memoirist shows how saving a dog can sometimes help you save yourself.

Julie Klam writes about dogs with a rollicking wit and a radiating warmth-as no other writer can. In her bestselling memoir You Had Me at Woof, she shared the secrets of happiness she learned as an occasionally frazzled but always devoted owner of Boston terriers. Now, with the same enchanting, pop culture-infused amalgam of humor and poignancy that reached the New York Times and the Today show and won the hearts of readers across the country, she returns with more humorous insight into life with canine companions.

Klam focuses here on dog rescue, and its healing power not only for the dogs who are cared for and able to find good homes, but also for the people who bond with these animals. Klam became involved with rescue after years as an owner of purebred dogs. She was looking for a way to help and participate in a community, but she never imagined just how much she would receive in return. The dogs she has rescued through the years have filled her life with laughter and contentment, sorrow and frustration, and they have made certain that she never has a dull moment. Along the way, she has collected stories from friends who have also found that guiding dogs to nurturing homes made their own lives richer. These experiences, which show us that even in our smallest gestures we can make a big difference, inspired Love at First Bark.

    "Wonderful!"

This was a great book! It is read by the author Julie Klam, and I always love it when the author reads his/her book. Her writing is beautiful, but I did enjoy You had Me at Woof a little bit more. Julie knows how to touch the heart of a dog lover!

Retired to mountains of California. Sell on eBay as Prsilla. No TV. Volunteer in wildlife rehab. Knit, sew or embroider while listening.

    "GOOD, BUT RATHER DISAPPOINTING"

I should have listened to the first book first. I expected this book to be about a dog and that dog's Person. So I was heart-broken when we got to know Morris and then he was gone! I'd thought he would be perfect for helping guard the family in their bad neighborhood. But no, we never saw him again. I also hoped to learn something about caring for a dog, relating to a dog. Nope!

Sorry but this lady is not nearly as funny as she thinks she is. Also, she is afflicted with great pride of place, her place being New York City. My place was San Francisco for 30 years. Now it is South Lake Tahoe, and I volunteer doing wildlife rehab. But I have no illusions about being the center of the universe. If I wrote my story, I would not announce the exact date and time something began to happen. This sets the reader up for some great event, but with this author, it's just her style of dramatizing the quite ordinary. She seems to think it's cute to whine about difficulties of everyday life -- even as she already has her own non-house-trained pet dogs -- and in a highrise apartment building! That is just stupid! And there is a lot more in the book about her than about dogs. If we aren't going to concentrate on the dogs, I would have enjoyed hearing more about little Violet and the husband.

This book is fairly well read by the author, but it is badly organized and way too short, with the last part going to New Orleans. I have enough significant incidents with animals in two years to write a patched-together "book" every bit as good as this! However, I would not presume because the people around me have spent their lives urging a coyote to eat, bottle-feeding raccoons, exercising eagles and hawks, and twice-daily cleaning of the bear house.

Yes, okay, it's a nice listen. It's not Penelope Smith. It's not art, much less Great Literature. A smooth read to listen to on a trip, yeah, okay.

    "So adorable."

Okay, so I've saved countless dogs and support many rescue groups so, perhaps, I'm not the best person but this was right up there with The Art of Racing in the Rain. I can totally relate and was a very enjoyable listen. I loved the story and the narration.
