Publisher's summary

Four US Navy SEALS departed one clear night in early July 2005 for the mountainous Afghanistan-Pakistan border for a reconnaissance mission. Their task was to document the activity of an al Qaeda leader rumored to have a small army in a Taliban stronghold. Five days later, only one of those Navy SEALS made it out alive.

This is the story of the only survivor of Operation Redwing, SEAL team leader Marcus Luttrell, and the extraordinary firefight that led to the largest loss of life in American Navy SEAL history. His squadmates fought valiantly beside him until he was the only one left alive, blasted by an RPG into a place where his pursuers could not find him. Over the next four days, terribly injured and presumed dead, Luttrell crawled for miles through the mountains and was taken in by sympathetic villagers who risked their lives to keep him safe from surrounding Taliban warriors.

A born and raised Texan, Marcus Luttrell takes us from the rigors of SEAL training, where he and his fellow SEALs discovered what it took to join the most elite of the American special forces, to a fight in the desolate hills of Afghanistan for which they never could have been prepared. His account of his squadmates' heroism and mutual support renders an experience for which two of his squadmates were posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for combat heroism that is both heartrending and life-affirming. In this rich chronicle of courage and sacrifice, honor and patriotism, Marcus Luttrell delivers a powerful narrative of modern war.

Words don’t do this book justice!!

This book dragged me through a full range of emotions over and over again. It should without a doubt be a movie. I’ve listened to about 10 similar books about battles in Afghanistan and Iraq and NONE of them come close to how intense this book is! Dudes a true hero, and all his men. God bless these types of people.

Very moving

This story is very moving. I literally had trouble listening to what happened to his team in front of his eyes. The emotions in this book and narrative was EXCELLENT!
Note: Despite what the negative review liberal media lovers (AKA Anti American hateful propaganda) would have you believe everything this man says is true. War is hell, that is not just some saying.. it’s TRUE people die in horrible ways and it’s a crime in its own rite under gods eyes. HOWEVER!!, when we make the decision to go and engage in war.. we cannot dictate these men’s jobs for them. They are elite because they earned that rite by passing physical and mental tests the average person like myself cringes to think of. I support our military and love my country god bless these men and their family and friends. I have to admit I was in a way saddened by the thought that I didn’t join the military or live in a state where your neighbors and friends actual care in the way this mans friends did. Excellent story… excellent people

Evan's Review

Great book. True American hero. If you saw the movie or not you need to read or listen to the book because the movie really doesn't do justice of what goes on between the time Marcus is taken in by the Afghanistan tribe and his rescue.

Heroism Defined

Great solid book. sometimes the narrator seemed a bit full of himself when he was narrating the book but as the story went along it got easier and easier to accept the way he was narrating it

Do yourself a favor and listen...

If you could sum up Lone Survivor in three words, what would they be?

Honor, valor, sacrifice

What other book might you compare Lone Survivor to and why?

Unbroken; Probably because Louie never quit, just like Marcus

Which character – as performed by Kevin Collins – was your favorite?

Marcus

Any additional comments?

Absolutely amazing story. We take so many things for granted, especially the sacrifices our men and women in uniform make day in day out.

real American hero's

What did you love best about Lone Survivor?

the pure sacrifice these men made

Who was your favorite character and why?

no favorite, all ( Americans) were remarkable men

What aspect of Kevin T. Collins’s performance would you have changed?

This was not one of my favorite performances but it did not take away from the story

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

during the last evasion when I thought it was nearing the end he had to continue to push and push, amazing story, superhuman effort

Any additional comments?

Some of the reviews mention the supposed anti-liberal views of Authors, I think its important to realize how these attiudes may have affected their decision to not kill the herders, also one of the reviews seemed to think the story was influenced by the Navy as it was too amped up, this story is so amazing and such a true story of sacrifice and determination that it could not be amped up, if anything I dont think its possible to really tell this story in a understated way its just too incredible, sorry for the grammer I've been up for two days !!
