Publisher's summary

Hillary Rodham Clinton is known to hundreds of millions of people around the world. Yet few beyond her close friends and family have ever heard her account of her extraordinary journey. She writes with candor, humor and passion about her upbringing in suburban middle-class America in the 1950s and her transformation from Goldwater Girl to student activist to controversial First Lady. Living History is her revealing memoir of life through the White House years. It is also her chronicle of living history with Bill Clinton, a thirty-year adventure in love and politics that survives personal betrayal, relentless partisan investigations, and constant public scrutiny.

Hillary Rodham Clinton came of age during a time of tumultuous social and political change in America. Like many women of her generation, she grew up with choices and opportunities unknown to her mother of grandmother. She charted her own course through unexplored terrain - responding to the changing times and her own internal compass - and became an emblem for some and a lightning rod for others. Wife, mother, lawyer, advocate, and international icon, she has lived through America's great political wars, from Watergate to Whitewater.

The only First Lady to play a major role in shaping domestic legislation, Hillary Rodham Clinton traveled tirelessly around the country to champion health care, expand economic and educational opportunity and promote the needs of children and families, and she criss-crossed the globe on behalf of women's rights, human rights and democracy. She redefined the position of First Lady, and helped save the presidency from an unconstitutional, politically motivated impeachment. Intimate, powerful and inspiring, Living History captures the essence of one of the most remarkable women of our time and the challenging process by which she came to define herself and find her own voice - as a woman and as a formidable figure in American politics.

Critic reviews

"Within the limitations of the genre, Clinton has produced a surprisingly engaging and, at points, even compelling book." (The Los Angeles Times)

Living a Lie

What a tall tale. This author cannot possibly believe that the peopleof America are this uninformed. She paints such a sad tale that one immediately understands why the Clintons were famous for their lies.
This is simply an attempt to further her political ambitons and she does not mind having to lie to us all to do that.

Close but no cigar

I listen to the whole book waiting to hear some sort of behind the seen news that I havent already heard on one of the local news channels, and it never came. I was hoping to get some insight from the former first lady, but I never did. It seems to me to just be a G rated recap of what went on in the white house nothing to waste your money over. I suppose I expected to much, after all she still is a politaican and has her career to protect. Mabey one day we will hear the jucie side of the story, but not from this book.

Great puff piece

This wasn't a book it was a puff piece for a presidential run in 2008. If your looking for reality or dirt, look elsewhere.

Living Story

It is a well written book that draws you into understanding Hillary at a more personal level. I enjoyed the story but have rated it (1) star because it seemed to be an obvious attempt to improve public relations. There are many key events/decisions that are conveniently not touched on at all in the book. Also some of the "confessions" of mistakes/misjudgements which draw you to see a very human side to Hillary are in direct conflict to interviews and public statements made to the press. In conclusion, while well written and a good story to read I felt it was an obvious attempt at propaganda for her future political career. I was very dissappointed because I expected the complete story told with sincerity and openness.

Simply disappointing.

Before read this book, I expected the deep insight of our history and future from the experience of first lady. However, it was simply disappinting to me.

This book is all about advertisement of Clinton family.

Dont bother

Snore! Did a reviewer actually indicate that "within this limited genre", autobiographies are not normally limited? Senator Clinton lived a highly international life during those eight years. Yet niether during her discussion of those years or the all too brief discussion of her life prior to those years did she express insight, struggle. For example, she was one of a fist full of women during her college career. She did not expand on the struggle, or the demands she faced nor did she use her experience as a woman in the US as a reflection on how she viewed the international women she met.
Boring.... but she is still a good politician.....

expected more

though there is some interesting info in this book and it does give some new insight beyond what was apparent in the media at the time i lived through these events, the book is written like a 7th grade essay on what i did this summer. it contains tons of filler, as if sen. clinton had counted her words to reach some required number and listening is almost painlfull at times, but curiosity pulls you through. the only thing worse than the writing is sen. clinton's narration, as if she were asked by the teacher to rise and read her essay before the whole class. as she attempts to be theatrical, her emphasis and drama are misplaced. while this is a true memior in the sense that clinton is trying to secure her place in history next to elenor roosevelt (and thus she has the right to rewrite history as all memoirs do-in response to some of the other reviews here) it is also a true political advertisement as her bald faced attempts to shore up her image are not the least bit veiled, although you get the impression that clinton thinks they are cleverly cloaked.

Nothing interesting

This is simply an advertisement for Hillary Clinton 2008. I can't help but think that this should be in the Fiction category.

This was the worst

I just wanted to go to sleep! Does this women think we really care about all what she had to say! Sounds more of what she wanted everything to be like.

When does it end?

THe Hillary curse started when she started ruuning the White House for Bill. She show here that her thoughts and philiosophies haven't changed and won't until she is elected for her second term.
