Publisher's Summary

In Life Is So Good, read by Emmy Award nominee LeVar Burton, George Dawson shares his unique wisdom about survival, joy, people, and the hidden beauty of growing old. Now 101, he has witnessed a century of change. We hear the history of America as seen through his eyes - race relations in the South, the World Wars, the invention of the automobile, and other historic events. Though he was only eight years old when he left home to work on a white family's farm, he took with him his parents' positive outlook - based on appreciating what he had, the wise observance of others, and common sense. Dawson's story offers a moving prescription for a satisfying and meaningful life.

    "One of my favorites!"

George Dawson spent the first 98 years of his life unable to read and signed his name with an X. He kept it a secret for years. At 98, George decided to attend Adult Education Classes to learn how to read. I didn't want to miss a single word of this sweet story because it could be a life lesson. Who wouldn't be inspired? LeVar Burton's beautiful narration was the icing on the cake. George Dawson lived to be 103 and learned to read. I found myself wondering if I could ever do the same at half that age. My only complaint is that the audio book was abridged. I hope the publishers eventually offer an unabridged version because I'd buy it too. This one is a keeper!

"And I do believe it is getting better"

I had read this book when it first came out and enjoyed the audio version with LeVar Burton narrating. I think this book was a good lesson in enjoying life no matter what is thrown at you as Mr. Dawson seems to have done. I liked the encouragement he brought to others to succeed in learning even though some may think you are past "your prime." Life is So Good, teaches us that we can continue to improve ourselves no matter the age.

    "everyone should read this!"
What did you love best about Life is So Good?

George has so many experiences that he recalls in this book, due to his long life, he lived through much of American history. Listening to this is like having a grandparent tell you stories of when they were young, except most grandparents didn't go through so much. EVERYONE could learn from George's simple advice. Do read this, you won't regret it.

    "It was so good."
What does LeVar Burton bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He was very persuasive. Because of Levar's believability, I almost thought the author was also the narrator.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

    I laughed AND cried.

    Any additional comments?

It gave me a glimpse of what life was like for some people during the past years. I was amazed at the memory and the unending endurance and optimism of George Dawson. It was truly inspiring.

    "A history lesson"
What did you love best about Life is So Good?

It is just a great view of life in this country early in our century. It is amazing to hear first hand about discrimination, Jim Crow laws and how it affected the lives of the blacks living in the south. It was also nice to listen to a true story from someone with such a positive additude for living, who worked hard and made something of himself dispite what the culture tried to do to him.

What did you like best about this story?

I think I really enjoyed the end where his son is there to talk about how he was raised. This is a gentleman that truly put family first. Something we could all learn about in this day and age.

Have you listened to any of LeVar Burton???s other performances before? How does this one compare?

He is a wonderful narrator. I love the pitch of his voice. He made this book seem very real.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I like how he set off with a purpose and grew from his experiences. I particularly like his experience on the snow field. Coming close to death does have its effects.

"Life is so good when you read this book!"

An uplifting story about someone who never gave up learning and enjoying life. I just wish this version was unabridged, because I would like to listen to all of it.
