©1973 James Herriot; (P)2008 BBC Audiobooks Ltd
I've read and loved all the Herriot books since I was a kid, so when I saw this one I bought it quickly, thinking it contained some previously unpublished stories. I haven't finished the entire book yet but so far it's been entirely a rehash of the same stories from the original books. A few from one, a few from another, etc. Disappointing.
I have loved the James Herriot collection for years and am now ecstatic to have it on my iPod. All his stories elicit a 'feel good' feeling for the listener with his brilliant writing and subject matter. Add Christopher Timothy's ability to make it all come to life in audio and you've got a winning combination over all.
Of course I would. It transports me into a world which is beautiful and kind and gentle and real.
Life is not a series of successes. Nor is Herriot's life such either. But of course everything becomes successful when it is accepted. I like his ability to change the
Yes, I have listened to many of his performances. I can only marvel at his tremendous skill. I have often wanted to write to the good man and thank him for the joy he has given me.(The same of course goes for the author. ) So I am glad of this opportunity to say a word of thanks. Are my sentiments of gratitude likely to be conveyed to these two noble men? I don't know how to compare this performance with the others except to say that are all just excellent.
Yes this book made me cry and it also made me laugh.
How talented and gifted are these two men! You give a great deal of joy and happiness to many many people.Thank you.Seamus Cullen
Christopher Timothy does such a great job reading the stories. I just wish their were more. I have read other vet stories, but James stories are so much more descriptive, takes you right to the moment.
This book is read by the actor who played Herriot in the BBC series. Since his voice was already in my head when I read the series, it was just a good extension of my experience.
Herriot was the first among several vets who have written about their experiences. I enjoyed learning about the experiences of vets prior to WWII and the modern miracle medicines we have today.
"Herriot as usual a joy"
What can I say, his books are a joy to listen to. Telling of a bygone age and all his wonderful stories of a vets life in the 30's and 40's. Lovely.
"Better than the TV show"
This book purchased to assist me with my powerwalking ( on Ipod)
did not help much with my fitness as i was laughing and chuckling so much . An excellent book which i have recommmended to my friends.
"A classic retelling..."
My long drives back and forth across the UK are a pleasure whilst listening to these classics. I get wrapped up in the fantastic story lines - the classic characters - and the irrepressible Christopher Timothy who brings these stories to life! Thoroughly enjoyable!
This is a wonderful book! Brilliantly narrated by
Christopher Timothy, its description of a vet?s life
in the beautiful countryside of the Yorkshire Dales is
truly great. It has sad, interesting and laugh out
loud short stories, which in my opinion is a winner.
Enjoy, and then listen to the next one, for more
interesting tales :)
"Let sleeping vets lie"
Another cracking listen. Id never listened to these before thinking it may be too old fashioned and stuffy, but the style is timeless and warming. Makes you wish you were in the Lake District in those warm friendly pubs and away from the clinical world we live in today.
"Love the James Herriot series!"
I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, particularly because it is narrated by one of the tv series original stars. After listening to this audio, I was inspired to purchase two more!
