Publisher's summary

In this entertaining and inspirational memoir, Hollywood legend Dick Van Dyke shares his secret to staying resilient in old age.

Beloved Hollywood icon Dick Van Dyke will celebrate his 90th birthday in December 2015. He's an established legend, having starred in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. And yet he's still keeping himself busy, entertaining America on television, in movies, on the stage, and on social media. Everyone wonders, "How does he do it?" For the first time, Van Dyke shares his secrets and tips on old age - just keep moving.

With a fun and folksy way of addressing its audience, Keep Moving serves as an instruction audiobook on how to embrace old age with a positive attitude. The chapters are filled with exclusive personal anecdotes that explore various themes on aging: how to adapt to the physical and social changes, deal with loss of friends and loved ones, stay current, fall in love again, and "keep moving" every day like there's no tomorrow.

Disappointed with aspects of this audiobook.

I was disappointed with aspects of this book. While there is no denying Van Dyke's enthusiasm for life and his obvious talent for light musical entertainment, his sharing tends to drift off on tangents that distance the reader and dilute the strong elements of his personal character. For example, his leftist political bias emerges in all its ugliness at moments when it was absolutely unnecessary. His "A" grading of Obama for being black and peddling hope to the masses was one of numerous small- minded gestures. Politics and art are incongruous and best kept separate, unless the intent is to exploit the listener... Elsewhere contradictions and hypocrisies arise such as the claim to be 'clean' while taking sleeping pills continuously over a forty year period doesn't seem pertinent, or a health concern. Strange. Finally, Van Dyke's lack of spiritual growth in the face of his own lifetime was surprising. Clearly he has lived in the material world and found comfort there but one might expect a certain spiritual wisdom that comes from old age and a career in arts related fields... a sense of the deeper beauty and sacredness... Not a Malibu thing perhaps...

I didn't want it to end

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes! Enjoyable story, positive information on aging, and typical Dick Van Dyke class.

What did you like best about this story?

Listening to Dick Van Dyke's stories. I smiled, I chuckled, and I laughed out loud.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A life lived well.

Any additional comments?

At first his voice is a little difficult because it has that aged roughness to it, but that went by the wayside quickly and it was all just Dick Van Dyke. Memorable.

I wonder if Dick will adopt me....

I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Dick's stories and listening to his wise words of wisdom. I didn't want the book to end. I wonder if he'll adopt me as his granddaughter. I need more stories like these in my life.

Refreshing Positive Read

What a tremendously invigorating piece of writing! Having the 89-year-old Dick Van Dyke read his own work with his grandfatherly conversational tone left me feeling as though I was sitting next to him in some comfortable retirement village collecting his pearls of wisdom. It made me more desirous to enjoy my life now as I have it now. It even made me more excited at the prospect of aging.

This is not a piece of literature, but it is full of timeless advice. At times, he was preaching to the choir, and at other times he was providing me with an entirely different perspective to adopt toward certain situations. The way he intertwined his tips for aging well with tidbits of his own life story served to create a remarkably fast-paced uplifting work that left me wanting to dance as much as he dances. This is one of the books that I will certainly return to again when I feel the need for a refreshing perspective on the life I am living.

not just for the old

I'm in my mid-thirties and although I am not considering myself elderly in any way I found this to be a very interesting read or listen as I happen to have done. this book really made me think about my dad and how know things are changing for him but not only just for him but how things are changing for me and ways to look at aging. great listen I'd listen to it again and I'd highly recommend.
