Publisher's summary

Very few people know that Mark Twain wrote a major work on Joan of Arc. Still fewer know that he considered it not only his most important, but also his best work. He spent 12 years in research and many months in France doing archival work, and then made several attempts until he felt he finally had the story he wanted to tell. He reached his conclusion about Joan's unique place in history only after studying in detail accounts written by both sides: the French, for whom she raised an army to return the Dauphin to the throne; and the English, who fought the French in the Hundred Year's War and were ultimately Joan's executioners. This is a fascinating and remarkably accurate biography of the life and mission of Joan of Arc told by one of this country's greatest storytellers.

Twain's best

Mark Twain considered Joan of Arc to be the best human our world ever produced. His great admiration shines through and can't help but inspire the reader as well. Although the story takes some fanciful flights, it is a marvelous and amazing recounting of a peasant girl leading a nation to freedom. Since French independence was so pivotal to the American revolution, it is a part of our own history. It is a reflection of the best in human nature.

Nice Listen

I enjoyed the presentation. I had zero prior knowledge of Joan and had never read a Twain book. The author is very kind to Joan and paints her as a noble and courageous person. I would like to read a more historical book on Joan for a contrast.

A great listen

Twain is one of the five best writers in the English language ever and this work is up to his usual standard. It is beautifully constructed and detailed. The structure relieves any dryness from the history but does not lose any context or content. A huge pleasure to listen to. Naration is clear and well executed.

I love Joan of Arc!

I love this story!!!!! This is so well written. You can feel Mark Twains love for Joan of Arc. As a result I love her too. Joan is an amazing example of doing Gods will no matter what. She is a true heroin.

A life learning experience

Joan of Arc by Mark Twain is a life learning experience. It talks about how Joan of Arc had to leave her home to go save France, and then get captured by the English. All of her trails where long and tiresome. The English who captured her were rude and mocked her, when they could. When all of her trails are over, she was convicted to death and was burned at the stake. This was happy, hopeful, joyful, and sad story. Towards the end of book you will cry your eyes out, but in the end you will be happy that you have read this book.

Mark Twain’s finest work

This is by far the best book by Twain! He research was done for years in France and the recording is so much better than reading it for myself because of all the French names pronounced so well by the reader.
I recommend this book to all! Thanks you!

Excellent

I had read this book years ago and had forgotten how very moving it is. Michael Anthony brought the story and the characters to life from Mark Twain’s eloquent and picturesque writing; the combination was a masterwork of writing and story telling. I felt as though I was present in the the book for the entire reading.
Bravo! Bravo!
