Publisher's summary

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. His body - along with a camera with five rolls of film, an SOS note, and a cryptic diary written in the back pages of a book about edible plants - was found six months later by a hunter.

Great Story

In my opinion, the writer used his own experience very well in this book. The cadence of this story surrounding "Alex Supertramp" seemed to follow the author's climb of the devil's thumb rather well. (It's been a while since I've been backpacking, and this is definitely giving me the itch, though they can keep their thrill-seeking for themselves. I'm happy just hiking my equipment 20 miles into a national park, hiking some more nearby, enjoying the food I bring, and leaving with everything I brought.) In the end, whether Chris McCandless was foolhardy or just unlucky in his final experience, I can't quite say based on this story alone. I do recommend this read.

Compelling

Very well written. The author writes this with empathy and understanding. Shared experiences seem to compel the narrative. Anyone that’s ever been completely alone in the wilderness should identify.

Outstanding story for the boomers like me.

My new favorite film by far. What an impact parents have on their children's behavior. The parents are not the only ones to blame, it's shared equally between all that encountered that lost soul.

I felt like I was there during this wild adventure

The epic adventures of Chris's story are amazing in itself yet the way this book was written had me feeling like I was there the whole time I listened to it

Reading this with 10th graders

Masterfully researched and written, this book makes me question our relationship with ourselves and nature.

Disjointed

The story was disjointed. It went off on so many tangents - telling stories of people that Chris met along the way, Without them, the story would have been too short, because there really wasn’t much of a story. I knew little much more about Chris at the end of the book as I did at the beginning.

Can relate

In my option this a reread. I am able to relate as I have family living in Alaska. Enjoy this read as I did

Narrator Okay, Quality So-So

Great story, as are most of Krakauer’s works from his time writing stuff for Outside magazine.

Narrator does a fine enough job, but sometimes the audio quality sounds pitchy and old. Solid listen overall though

Amazing listen

Great story with a lot of insight that won't be found in the movie. The narrator's voice I feel is perfect for this tale and nice to listen to.
