Publisher's summary

In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. His body - along with a camera with five rolls of film, an SOS note, and a cryptic diary written in the back pages of a book about edible plants - was found six months later by a hunter.

This book is so good. So haunting. I found myself pausing at moments to research passages and locations and people discussed. It's such a heartbreaking story incredibly well researched and told.

Insightful & Intelligent

Easy to follow. The narrator was great. I appreciate that Roman Dial was in this book. I recently read "The Adventures Son" regarding Roman Dials son. There was a lot of speculation but intelligent based.

Narrator change?

This story is good ( I am teaching it in high school); however, the narrator could slow down a bit and vary voice pitch ( a bit monotone) to improve the performance.

nature enthusiast

I couldn't stop listening! It is such a captivating story and Krakauer goes into extensive detail. It's inspiring. Highly recommended to nature lovers and youth seeking their purpose in life.

I wasn't crazy about the voice actor at first - a bit monotone - but I got used to it and liked it in the end.

Great wide angle view of the story

I enjoyed all the background on the family, the areas, the people. The author really researched and presented the story in a way I wasn’t expecting.
