A liberating motorcycle journey through Africa with descriptions of the amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape destiny.
Into Africa tells the story of a novice motorcyclist who takes on the challenge of riding the length of the continent just because, 'it seemed like a great idea’. Sam Manicom had only planned to take a temporary break from his successful retail career, but the one-year ride was so life-changing that he continued adventuring around the world for another seven years, covering 55 countries and 200,000 miles. Sam had no idea how liberating motorcycle travel would be. Revelling in a new-found freedom without timetables or routines, he became fascinated by his ability to explore side roads at a whim and reach remote parts of the continent that many travellers never find. Though Africa is just 5,000 miles from top to toe, Sam explored over 22,000 miles on every kind of road imaginable.
Narrated by Sam, ride with him as he describes Africa's amazing people and places, the joy of big skies and the open road, and the sometimes harrowing events that would shape his destiny. This is a genuine tale of the unexpected.

Having spent over 5 years in Africa working at various U. S. Embassies, this audio book stuck a heart felt cord with me. Sam's descriptive abilities puts you right into the adventure and I can vouch for his accuracy. This story is not about motorcycles, but shows what the real Africa is like, which can only be experienced by motorcycle. Read or hear this book. You will be enlightened.
I had a hard time ever pressing pause on this one. Into Africa is a fun, exciting adventure that flows so naturally. Sam's writing style and his narration was easy to follow and made me feel like I was riding along with him the whole time. There was never a dull moment and it left me wanting more. If you're a travel enthusiast, or just looking for a fun easy listen, then this book is perfect.
So good that I need a bike now! I too want to explore and see what's out there. So good and infectious. Never read or listened to a travel book and his adventure and voice have inspired me to take motorcycle classes and one day have a journey of my own.
Yes... Just in interesting book about riding through Africa and the interaction with the people.
Not really... it was all very informative.
It was a good book. It simply put a stamp of why I have no desire to visit the places he did. The book was more about the places and the people than it was about the ride. Sometimes it got really slow and boring, but other times it was interesting. Must be nice to have all that time and money to do such a thing. Although at times he was speaking of not having the funds to do something or go somewhere. Overall, it was interesting.
I want to.
The middle, the beginning, and the end.
I enjoyed the book so much I started it over again right away.
I had a chance to Tweet with the Sam. Neat to be able to live the experience through the book and actually message with the author.
Sam kept me up all night for a week while I listened to this incredible tale. His story is so well told that it reached all of my senses. I smelt, heard, tasted and felt Africa with him and was reminded of my own travels through this continent. Audio books can sometimes do little more than put you to sleep but this particular one read by Sam himself was mesmerising.
If you are interested in travel, adventure or simply good story telling, you will thoroughly enjoy this read. Thank you Sam for allowing us to share your world.
I have listened to it more than once, and sometimes (when I am pinned at home!) I go back and listen to favorite parts.
Jupiter's travels -- although they are not that similar.
No, haven't listened to other audiobooks narrated by Sam, but will definitely do in the future.
An excellent story, exciting but also down-to-earth. There is no hint of the hype of "how awesome I am because I can ride my bike through Africa" that exists in some adventure travel books. Sam is a great story teller. Makes you want to jump on your bike and go on a long trip off the beaten path.
"A real motorcycle adventure"
I listened to this book whilst on my own motorcycle adventure, riding across Canada on dirt roads. I was constantly nodding in agreement with the experiences Sam was writing about.
Reading a book can be rather abstract, you never know whether the author is stretching the truth. By reading the book himself, feel a real connection to his experiences on the road.
Sam talks about having an guardian angel watching over him and how even some of the worst events resulted in unexpected experiences. This resonated very strong with my own experiences on the road.
I would recommend this as essential material for anyone considering an adventure... or any armchair adventurers that wants to get a real feel of life on the road.
"One of the best motorcycle travel books"
One of the best
he did what most would love to do and tells it so it makes you want to do it
Have read all the books but audio seems to make it more real
Different emotions , you cannot help but feel them
Sams voice is perfect for the audio book , if he needs another job he could make a good living out of telling other peoples stories
"A mad choice leads to a brilliant adventure!"
Definitely, I have read the book and was pleased to hear it in Sam ' s own words.
I don't generally read travel books, they aren't my thing so can only be compared to Sam ' s other works... of which Under Asian Skies is the only one available on audio book yet.... I seriously encourage him to publish the others in audio format.
It is very personal and makes you feel like you are with him... His written work does this too... but hearing his voice makes it work even better.
As a biker myself I have to laugh at some of the rookie mistakes I remember making myself... but in Sam ' s case he did it on a.mad adventure for a rookie to take on. RESPECT!
I believe his insight into culture is also important as there are many misconceptions in the western world that he puts right.
Sam is a brilliant story teller who makes you feel like you are travelling with him. The fact he narrates his own books makes it more personal.
While this is about a man riding his motorcycle the bike itself is only the vehicle. .. bit he metaphorically and literally and allows for the adventure.
This book is great for both people who love bikes as well as those who have never been near one.
Really enjoyable. Excellent narration. Please can we have more audible books from Sam Manicom
"An amazing read / listen that I didn't want to end"
Have now also bought the print version and Sam Manicom's next Audible is top of my Wish List!
These Are The Days That Must Happen To You by Dan Walsh
All of them!
I've just finished listening to Sam Manicom’s Into Africa which, on my one book per month subscription, I’d chose it over Guy Martin’s My Autobiography on the deciding factor that its read by the author, rather than being voiced by a “professional”. It was a "book" that I couldn't put down / stop listening to and yet at the same time didn't want to get to the end of. Being read by Sam, it gives the story a whole other dimension, feeling and authenticity. If you're into motorbikes, travel, adventure or Africa, Sam Manicom's "Into Africa” is an amazing read / listen. Apologies to Guy Martin but the Audiable version of Sam’s next book Under Asian Skies now tops my Wish List!
Already have and they are following his adventures.
The beginning and how he had started his adventures.
His emotion is his voice reading his journey and the people who he met one his travels.
A lot of envy and wishing I had not done something simlar.
The way his reading is mater of fact, his adventures are a dream for most. Sam is one of the nicest guys you ever meet and he will always take time to talk to you at the shows. Well recommended.
"Highly recomended author narration!"
Sam is a fantastic storyteller and he has an amazing story to tell. He tells his story with great attention to detail which makes it very much alive. I highly recomend it to anyone who is interesting in travel and cultural experiences. I will be getting his second book as soon as I have finished this.
an amazing journey, fantastically written and narrated. A true inspiration for anyone wanting to or just dreaming of a biking adventure!!
"Amazing insight into Africa in the early 90's"
