Publisher's summary

1967, eight-year-old Davie's world was turned upside down. Traveling with a madman who was without conscience, Davie was physically and mentally abused at every turn. Using every ounce of courage he could muster, Davie fought day after day just to survive - never knowing which brutal attack would be the last for him and his family. This is a shocking tale of abuse, manipulation, and bravery as told by a survivor. Kennesaw Taylor shares his story with others to let them know that there is hope. Let the cycle of abuse be broken.

Traveling the country to promote Informally Educated, Kennesaw has tried to raise awareness about the abuse and domestic violence he endured during his childhood. Trying to save one child or woman from what he went through, trying to help others break the cycle of abuse they are trapped in. Kennesaw is also a humor columnist for several small papers. Bizarre story. Recommended.

If you could sum up Informally Educated in three words, what would they be?

This book is so bizarre I found myself questioning the truth of it, however that is probably my own naivety. It is a very disturbing book and it actually made me physically uneasy, it is frightening to think that there are people like Cooper out there in the world. Guess I can't count to 3.

Wish I would have exchanged

This is a tragic story and I commend the author for sharing it. However, I found this book very boring and hard to follow.

State of mind--no kidding

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

While reading this, I had to keep reminding myself that this is a non-fiction book. Although I did endure some things that I would consider child abuse, it was nothing compared to what the author endured. God bless him for not becoming what he endured. My father always said that his corporal punishment was how he was raised and was the only thing he knew.

What did you like best about this story?

I actually almost put this story down down multiple times. . . The thing I "liked" best was the author's honesty and openness in his experiences.

What about Bob Hennessy’s performance did you like?

He spoke clearly and with emphasis on where it belonged.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book made me very angry. It also brought back memories of things that were done to me. It did dredge up some things from the past that I wished to forget, but after hearing what he went through, I was able to pull my experiences out and examine them with little emotion.

Any additional comments?

This book isn't for just anyone. If you've been or know anyone who has been abused this will cause a reaction.

I don't know enough about the book to review the book it's self because the reader was so bad. he was so incredibly boring. I was going to return it, but I returned 2 books in two months so I am unable to, so if some voices bug you. Save your ears and don't buy this book.

Hard to listen to but .. harder to put down

Such sad raw story
The writer has wit and a talent to make the ugliness he endured into this must read book
People just don’t know what children have to deal with …makes you look and feel differently to that withdrawn and socially distanced child you encounter

Hard to believe

It is hard to believe anyone could treat another human being the way these children were treated! Yet I know it happens. It makes me sick to my stomach! I knew when I started this book that I shouldn’t listen to it, yet I continued on, not enjoying it, but not being able to stop either. I know something of abuse as I have two adopted daughters who were terribly abused as children. When one in particular tries to tell me of some of the things she went through, I can only scream and beg her to stop because at that moment it makes me want to kill someone. How either of them turned into the incredibly kind, loving and productive individuals that they are is nothing short of miraculous! It is the same for this boy!, now a good man I admire him so much, and his siblings, for fighting through this hideous past and becoming good people.
