Publisher's summary

With her disarming, intimate, completely accessible voice, and dry sense of humor, Nora Ephron shares with us her ups and downs in I Feel Bad About My Neck, a candid, hilarious look at women who are getting older and dealing with the tribulations of maintenance, menopause, empty nests, and life itself.

The woman who brought us When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and Bewitched, and the author of best sellers Heartburn, Scribble Scribble, and Crazy Salad, discusses everything, from how much she hates her purse to how much time she spends attempting to stop the clock: the hair dye, the treadmill, the lotions and creams that promise to slow the aging process but never do. Oh, and she can't stand the way her neck looks. But her dermatologist tells her there's no quick fix for that.

Ephron chronicles her life as an obsessed cook, passionate city dweller, and hapless parent. She recounts her anything-but-glamorous days as a White House intern during the JFK years and shares how she fell in and out of love with Bill Clinton...from a distance, of course. But mostly she speaks frankly and uproariously about life as a woman of a certain age.

Utterly courageous, wickedly funny, and unexpectedly moving in its truth telling, I Feel Bad About My Neck is a book of wisdom, advice, and laugh-out-loud moments, a scrumptious, irresistible treat.

Critic reviews

  • The Book Sense Book of the Year Award, Adult Nonfiction, 2007

"Ephron returns to her print roots with a new collection of essays reflecting the perspective of an aging, but still crackling sharp, cultural scribe." (Boston Globe)

"This current gatherum of hard and funny truths spares neither the author's pride nor her audience's, but it does salve wounds, and many of Ephron's insights are bound to come in handy." (The New York Times Book Review)

"Ephron's insights make the book an enjoyable romp.... For people who want a little candor and humor about not only hanging on but getting on, this book is for you." (The New York Post)

Yes, this book is for single elderly women

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Nothing, it' just way to old for me

Would you be willing to try another book from Nora Ephron? Why or why not?

No more, this one was sad, funny and menopausal

Did Nora Ephron do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes she did. She talked about death alot in her book. I kind of feel sorry for her, like she knows she's close to dying and she is just like the rest of us, worried about her appearances, weight issues, marriages and divorces, friends dying on her; and especially her neck

What else would you have wanted to know about Nora Ephron’s life?

nothing more

So funny! So much rings true...

Narrator has the best sarcastic voice. Her delivery is pretty hilarious. Not the kind of book I usually read, but really enjoyed listening to it.

Entertaining

Got some laughs but in general she just complains. I was expecting an eventual “on the other side aging is amazing”. But it never came.

Hilarious and thoughtful

Listening to Nora narrate her book was a true joy! I'm not quite in the age demographic she is talking about, but I don't care this book was worth it! Gave me a glimpse of what I get to look forward too.

A nice farewell book

I enjoyed this collection of essays and will miss this recently deceased writer. She has funny though caustic observations to make about aging.

Enjoyable with every listen

I love this book, and enjoy it more every time I listen to it. I like the way Nora Ephron reads her words, and although I will never lead a life like hers, I can empathize well with her experiences.

sad and funny and true

Women under 50 reading this book may not have experienced some of the subjects yet, but Nora Ephron has the writing ability to make anyone understand where she is coming from. If only I had this information 30 years ago. I would have bought that bikini and worn it everywhere for 5 years!
