Audie Award Finalist, Biography/Memoir, 2014

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Archie Panjabi is an excellent choice to deliver this memoir of the Pakistani girl who stood up to the Taliban. Her voice is youthful, lilting, and buoyant, invoking the key qualities of the now well-known young woman who, at the age of 15, was shot three times in the face by the Taliban because she actively advocated education for girls. Panjabi narrates with vigor; rapid sentences and warm tones evoke Malala's persona. The listener has the feeling of being told this story by Malala herself rather than by an actor, which is the best type of audiobook. Those who want to hear more about Afghanistan, Pakistan's Swat Valley, or the family behind this courageous young person will not be disappointed." (AudioFile Magazine)

Amazing Story!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

As I listened to this book, I was appalled at the conditions under which these people live. Why do people resort to such violence and terror? How do governments sit back and allow this to happen? Malala's family's courage and their story is remarkable.

A moving human story.

This was a look into another culture and brought understanding about this real life occurrence. It was both difficult and easy to listen to. You won't be sorry to know this girl.

Amazing

I learned so much about the inequality. I never understood this about the Koran, it's difficult to comprehend when you are a Christian. We have seen so much damage done by the Taliban, & continue to say "why?" Without education we will continue to ask why?" I hope Malala continues to fight for the right to education. This was a beautiful, informative book. Thank you.

Emotional and Powerful

Amazing and inspirational story. This girl is a great influencer and her life experience makes me feel a huge sense of respect for her and for all good people in her nation. I hope her dreams of peace and that she can go back to Pakistan comes true one day.

We need more people like Malala!

What a beautiful person, raised by loving parents. The world she lived in did not stop her father and mother from defying the traditional role that girls and women take in their society. They did this through love and respect for each and their children. They did not go against their religious beliefs or put down others religious beliefs. It shows that love and healthy convictions in a family plants the seed of hope in others. One small beautiful, normal girl, who lived in a chaotic war torn country made a difference . It's really not about Muslims or Christians and who is right, it's about the right that every person has to live safe, feed, educated and to be all that one can be to make the world a better place.
She is a beautiful soul .
Very well written, every child and every adult should read her story for two reasons: 1) to understand that education is the greatest way to understand yourself and the world around you. 2) to understand the struggle that the people of Pakistan have endured and still are enduring today.

admiration

I loved this book. It is very genuine and sad and happy and beautiful... it makes you go through a roller coaster of emotions. You feel the impotence of the author and her family when everything starts.
I also loved this book because it shows the other side of the Muslim religion and it helps understand where the prejudice that people have (including myself) comes from.
it also makes you value what you have and how fortunate people who have access to education are

Simply Inspiring

Malala is truly an inspiring young girl. These are the books our youth should read, so they may see how difficult yet courageous children in other countries can be. Even though they have no freedom at all.

Inspiring

Archie aka Kalinda from "The Good Wife" did a great job reading Malala's inspiring story.
