Publisher's summary

Audie Award Finalist, Biography/Memoir, 2014

When the Taliban took control of the Swat Valley in Pakistan, one girl spoke out. Malala Yousafzai refused to be silenced and fought for her right to an education.

On Tuesday, October 9, 2012, when she was fifteen, she almost paid the ultimate price. She was shot in the head at point-blank range while riding the bus home from school, and few expected her to survive.

Instead, Malala's miraculous recovery has taken her on an extraordinary journey from a remote valley in northern Pakistan to the halls of the United Nations in New York. At sixteen, she has become a global symbol of peaceful protest and the youngest nominee ever for the Nobel Peace Prize.

I am Malala is the remarkable tale of a family uprooted by global terrorism, of the fight for girls' education, of a father who, himself a school owner, championed and encouraged his daughter to write and attend school, and of brave parents who have a fierce love for their daughter in a society that prizes sons.

I am Malala will make you believe in the power of one person's voice to inspire change in the world.

Critic reviews

"Narrator Archie Panjabi is an excellent choice to deliver this memoir of the Pakistani girl who stood up to the Taliban. Her voice is youthful, lilting, and buoyant, invoking the key qualities of the now well-known young woman who, at the age of 15, was shot three times in the face by the Taliban because she actively advocated education for girls. Panjabi narrates with vigor; rapid sentences and warm tones evoke Malala's persona. The listener has the feeling of being told this story by Malala herself rather than by an actor, which is the best type of audiobook. Those who want to hear more about Afghanistan, Pakistan's Swat Valley, or the family behind this courageous young person will not be disappointed." (AudioFile Magazine)

Strength of Character and Purpose Beyond Measure

Malala is a beautiful soul on this planet, who by the grace of God is getting her message of education for girls and equal rights for all heard around the world in the spirit of love, peace, courage, faith, perseverance, and in the name of all that is right and good. This autobiography should be introduced and read in every classroom globally, and heed taken to examine, learn from, and not repeat the historical precedents which have unfolded in her young life. If every person was as well read and sincere about their life's purpose to better this world, peace would reign.
Please read her incredible life's story, and be prepared to be changed inside forever, and ready to act in order to better other's needs.

missed the mark on so many levels

I saw a documentary (I think it was) on her, which was amazing. but this book with its jumping around in timeline and giving all these details (not sure what the point of the details is) is quite bad.
whomever helped her write this book is not a very good storyteller. again, if you're going to provide a story or detail there has to be a point to it, driving the drama and story towards the theme and plot, to the lessons, to the overall message. this story could have been so much more inspiring and emotional if the storytelling had been better.
things I liked
it's interesting that the prologue (author did the audible for) was the guts of the story. amazing history of the region.
interesting how easily an extremist group can take over.
things I didn’t like
points deducted for a prologue.
it took chapter 10 to get me interested, and it took forever to get here, through all the jumbled timelines and unnecessary/questionable details.
jumping around in timeline: birth and then fast forward and then back to birth. and then back and forth in timeline for parents birth. it's so confusing for the reader to write books this way.
this wasn't written very well. so many details that have nothing to do with the story.

Boring and difficult to follow

it's hard to follow her ideas. I can't continue after Chapter 2. I forced myself to finish, but I just couldn't do it. She's a hero, but perhaps she's too young to write a book.

Inspirational and moving!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this title. the narrator was exceptional and Malala's story is moving. I feel I have not done enough to help the world after hearing all the work she did prior to being shot. The bullet gave her the platform but, she was already doing the work she was called to do.

Great book

An amazing account of her struggles and why she feels so strongly about educational rights for girls in Pakistan. This book helped me to better understand Pakistani culture. It's also scary how things changed so quickly when the Taliban moved in, how people were so easily misled by someone who was charismatic. We like to think that couldn't happen in our country, but I couldn't happen to draw some parallels to what's happening in our country right now. This is a very thought provoking book, I highly recommend it.

Beautifully written and read

This autobiography was written artfully and read perfectly by Archie Panjabi. I’m not a crier, but I found myself tearing up often while listening to this book. The story is full of rich emotion and tells a detailed tale about life in the East. Highly recommend.

Islamic Propaganda.

This book seems to have a driving purpose. It goes so far as to slip in that the west is to blame for the attacks it receives. It glorifies a life that the writer has left behind. I do not recommend this book .

A book of too much self boasting

Interesting
BUT
Hearing how great someone is in first person ("I am") over and over becomes a turn off.

Accomplishments great but book gets redundant about "how great I am"
