Publisher's summary

Everyone thinks they know the real Gordon Ramsay: rude, loud, pathologically driven, stubborn as hell. But this is his real story…

This is Gordon Ramsay’s autobiography – the first time he has told the full story of how he became the world’s most famous and infamous chef: his difficult childhood, his brother’s heroin addiction and his failed first career as a footballer: all of these things have made him the celebrated culinary talent and media powerhouse that he is today. Gordon talks frankly about:

  • his tough childhood: his father’s alcoholism and violence and the effects on his relationships with his mother and siblings
  • his first career as a footballer: how the whole family moved to Scotland when he was signed by Glasgow Rangers at the age of fifteen, and how he coped when his career was over due to injury just three years later
  • his brother’s heroin addiction.
  • Gordon’s early career: learning his trade in Paris and London; how his career developed from there: his time in Paris under Albert Roux and his seven Michelin-starred restaurants.
  • kitchen life: Gordon spills the beans about life behind the kitchen door, and how a restaurant kitchen is run in Anthony Bourdain-style.
  • and how he copes with the impact of fame on himself and his family: his television career, the rapacious tabloids, and his own drive for success.

Seeing another side to GR

This is a wonderful story about the man behind the scenes . Real people , family stories and and how his career began. Hard work, determination and compassion are the keys to success. This is told in a beautiful story and I really appreciate GR being the storyteller. You can hear the emotions in his voice!

Now it makes sense

Understanding where Gordon Ramsay came from makes it easier to understand his amazing uncompromising determination to strive for the best and his addiction to work. It was interesting to find that while Gordon's adaption to his father's abuse saw him rise to the top, his brother sank into the depths of heroin addiction. Gordon has managed to tell his story without undue sentimentality or too much bravado. Can't wait to see what he achieves in the next 20 years.

This guy really has gumption.

Story
The guy ate humble pie all the way to the top.

Performance
He carried it by force of personality.

Overall
It's an excellent book because the message is clear. He succeeded by recognizing how the system works for being a restaurant, for earning Michelin stars and for running a business that scales up while maintaining high standards. Sure he worked his tail off, but he also learned to overcome ego every step of the way. He mastered himself in the sense that elite warriors master themselves.

Love Gordon, More to his story than meets the eye

I hope to hear more from Gordon on how he rose abouve his struggles despite a lack of family support, and where he got the deep Wells of compassion to deal with his family with such fairness. how did you learn such deep loyalty for your fellow cooks and who most influenced u towards excellence in your cooking? so much more to tell inside your story...

Interesting

I'm a big Gordon Ramsey fan so this was very interesting. His narration was a bit off even though I love the sound of his voice. Still a great read.

Gordon, just marvellous!

I liken this book to another audiobook I listened to last year - Craig Ferguson's 'American on Purpose'. The stories share the tail of a Scottish man that grew up under difficult and trying circumstances only to carry through with determination, passion and strength.

I loved this book. I stayed up until 1am to ensure I felt the full impact of a signal sitting, which I can honestly say was worth it. All I can add, as a recent addition to Gordon's fan base, is that I continue to be inspired by Gordon and all of his work.
