Publisher's summary

Though they have the vote and the Pill and haven't been burned as witches since 1727, life isn't exactly a stroll down the catwalk for modern women. They are beset by uncertainties and questions: Why are they supposed to get Brazilians? Why do bras hurt? Why the incessant talk about babies? And do men secretly hate them?

Caitlin Moran interweaves provocative observations on women's lives with laugh-out-loud funny scenes from her own, from the riot of adolescence to her development as a writer, wife, and mother. With rapier wit, Moran slices right to the truth - whether it's about the workplace, strip clubs, love, fat, abortion, popular entertainment, or children - to jump-start a new conversation about feminism. With humor, insight, and verve, How To Be a Woman lays bare the reasons why female rights and empowerment are essential issues not only for women today but also for society itself.

Empowering story, that is well written.

It is like Bridget Jones's Diary uncensored (USA standards, not EU point of view) thought provoking story with femanist (empowering) groundings. Makes you evaluate your point of view in life.

Best suited for the under-30 set

Any additional comments?

With the exception of a few jewels of wisdom, I found this book to be a bit boring and frequently checked the time remaining. It's the first 9-hour book that was actually too long, particularly the bits about Caitlin's childhood and adolescence. Having said that, I would highly recommend the book to women under the age of 30. But by mid-life, most of us have been there and done that and are ready to move on.

Not Recommended (for me)

I really struggled to finish this one and frankly, if it was a paper book, I would have put it down. I found myself wanting to fast forward a few chapters. Maybe it is because I am American, but I felt like I was being shouted at the entire time so that doesn't make for an enjoyable read. Also, unless you have never read anything remotely "feminist" before, nothing in this book was groundbreaking or nuanced.

This book changed my life.

What did you love best about How to Be a Woman?

Caitlin Moran is the kind of kook I'd want around all the time. Her hilarious enthusiasm and unpretentious, thoughtful take on being a woman are inspiring.
I recommend this book often, and if someone's stuck in the car with me, I play it for them.
Both the humor and the substance of this book win. It can be broken into bits or consumed in one go. Caitlin Moran presents anecdotal and empirical evidence to clarify her ideas. The points she makes, whether on topics as charged as abortion, or as funny as pubic hair, are clear and logical. I remember feeling intense relief at hearing this woman's insights into the joys and dilemmas faced by women. She empowered me to be more confident, well-informed, and comfortable in my own skin.

What a treat

Haven't laughed so much in ages. Enjoyed the author so much I am now checking out her tv series, "raised by wolves." Still laughing. This is an author worth keeping track of.
