Editorial reviews

An early story in Hollywood Hellraisers has Marlon Brando being taken to kindergarten on a leash. Needless to say, most of this book covers the period after which Brando's leash has come off. Robert Sellers, author of a previous book on the bad boys of British moviemaking, gives gossipy, second-hand accounts of the more sordid aspects of the lives of Brando, Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson, and Warren Beatty, shuttling through stories of sexual conquest, rampant drug and alcohol abuse, and general bad behavior. None of the four legends were interviewed by Sellers, but as a kind of survey course in actors acting out, Hollywood Hellraisers will raise listeners eyebrows, and Jim Frangione's clear, even-handed narration provides a nice counterpoint to these salacious Hollywood tall tales.

Publisher's summary

In his follow-up to the acclaimed Hellraisers, Sellers traces the intertwining lives and careers of four outrageous Hollywood movie mavericks.

“I don’t know what people expect when they meet me. They seem to be afraid that I’m going to piss in the potted palm and slap them on the ass.” - Marlon Brando

“I should have been dead ten times over. I believe in miracles. It’s an absolute miracle that I’m still around.” - Dennis Hopper

“You only lie to two people in your life: your girlfriend and the police.” - Jack Nicholson

“The best time to get married is noon. That way, if things don’t work out, you haven’t blown the whole day.” - Warren Beatty

They’re the baddest bad-asses Hollywood as ever seen: Marlon Brando, Dennis Hopper, Warren Beatty, and Jack Nicholson. They are men to whom rules did not apply; normal standards of behavior were simply too wearisome to worry about. These are men who brawled, boozed, snorted, and screwed their way into legend - but along the way they changed acting and the way movies were made forever. Hollywood Hellraisers is a whistle-stop tour of jaw-dropping sexual activity, misbehavior of an Olympic standard, all-out excess, and genuine madness. It’s a wonder Hollywood survived.

British Tabloid Gossip

Yeah, yeah - it's a sensational "who slept with who" book, but it does sort of give a quadruple biography for the buck. Some of the writing is just terrible - like turn your head and say "what?!" terrible. It's also from 2010 so doesn't have Dennis' end of life story. Since it's a British writer using British terms throughout, I will sum it up with a favorite British word: Rubbish.

No, Just No

I have never started a book and not finished it but this one was going to be my first. But I persevered. Sorry I did. If you like these actors and want to keep liking them, don’t read this book. Don’t say I. didn’t warn you.

Entertaining and revealing but leaves a lot out

I was surprised the author copped out at the end with regards to Warren Beatty. He is still even at his age regretting his past. However with the marriage to Annette Bening, a talented actress, who widely known as a very centered and intelligent individual, warren has come to a realization that he was a complete asshole in his youth. Now his children will not let him live it down.

Entertaining, and full of sex

Admittedly I am not a star gazer. I knew of all four people, but not a ton about them. The books is written basically as a tell all of who slept with who. For the first chapter it was very interesting. After that, it was more of the same and a little tedious, but still entertaining. Overall it was a good book, and I enjoyed it. I even got used the the British narration, such as not using the word "the". For example, "he was taken to hospital....". If you have an interest in these actors, or the days of Hollywood from not so long ago, then you'll probably enjoy this book.

Learned a lot , interesting all the way through

A great insight into the lives of these greats of film, filled with wild stories and funny anecdotes, broken down at a good pace, somehow finding a way to stay interesting throughout the process. Great read

A good ride

Lots of sex, drugs and guys that took life as the playground we all wish we had the courage to live. They left behind some classic films and plenty of dogs as well as kids, pain and a taste of what living on the edge is all about.

The book seemed to go on forever.
