Publisher's summary

Over the course of his 60 years, Christopher Hitchens has been a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has been both a socialist opposed to the war in Vietnam and a supporter of the U.S. war against Islamic extremism in Iraq.

He has been both a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most dangerous places and a legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for alcohol and literature. He is a fervent atheist, raised as a Christian, by a mother whose Jewish heritage was not revealed to him until her suicide.

In other words, Christopher Hitchens contains multitudes. He sees all sides of an argument. And he believes the personal is political. This is the story of his life, lived large.

Critic reviews

"Hitchens also proves to be more than a capable reader; his wit, erudition, and passionate unbelief could not have been conveyed as compellingly by a surrogate. Highly recommended for all general collections." (Library Journal on God Is Not Great)

"As narrator, he contributes a pleasantly moderated voice and a listener-friendly British accent." (AudioFile Magazine on God Is Not Great)

Great listen read by Hitch

Is there another contemporary that has the oratory and argumentative polemic skill that Christopher Hitchens had? I thoroughly enjoyed his review of his life and thoughts

Wonderful, funny, gripping memoir

Hitchens’ command of English and knowledge of literature is spectacular, his wit is acerbic, his perspectives on politics incisive, and his valence is unfailingly that of an Enlightenment thinker. His spoken / reading voice is wonderful. I loved the audiobook so much, I also bought a hard copy version.

This is a tough read

I really like Hitchens but this book is really hard to finish. It just keeps going.

Another page turner from the Hitch!

Hitchens shows us again why he's considered as one of the best minds of modern times. He takes us through an intimate journey through his incredibly rich life. An absolute pleasure to listen to narrated by the man himself!

In his own words

I enjoyed this book and love it when the author reads his own words, usually. However, I struggled to understand Hitchens sometimes, his accent was difficult to understand, his volume varied, his speech pattern got in the way of what he was trying to say. Another of his books, my all time favorite, “Arguably,” was fantastic, it was read by another narrator and much clearer.

Very hard to understand.

If you could hear and understand half of what he said it might be a good talk.

It was the most disappointing book I've tried to listen to so far. I finally just gave up.

Hitch at his best.

An inside look at the legend himself. For some reason I out off reading this one. A memoir from Hitch didn't sound as interesting as an opinion piece or historical analysis. I was wrong. This was every bit as satisfying.
