Publisher's summary

Over the course of his 60 years, Christopher Hitchens has been a citizen of both the United States and the United Kingdom. He has been both a socialist opposed to the war in Vietnam and a supporter of the U.S. war against Islamic extremism in Iraq.

He has been both a foreign correspondent in some of the world's most dangerous places and a legendary bon vivant with an unquenchable thirst for alcohol and literature. He is a fervent atheist, raised as a Christian, by a mother whose Jewish heritage was not revealed to him until her suicide.

In other words, Christopher Hitchens contains multitudes. He sees all sides of an argument. And he believes the personal is political. This is the story of his life, lived large.

Critic reviews

"Hitchens also proves to be more than a capable reader; his wit, erudition, and passionate unbelief could not have been conveyed as compellingly by a surrogate. Highly recommended for all general collections." (Library Journal on God Is Not Great)

"As narrator, he contributes a pleasantly moderated voice and a listener-friendly British accent." (AudioFile Magazine on God Is Not Great)

Enjoyable, Engaging and thought Provoking

While I'm a biased fan I still would recommend this to anyone. Hitchens wit and observations when applied to his own life create a fascinating and reflective story. Made all the better by his reading of the book.

Details of the breadth of his experience!

I've been a relatively casual consumer if Hitchens since, unfortunately, the year of his death. I primarily listened to his debates and online discussions and read God is Not Great in high school. He shaped a lot of ny understanding if the religious debate during that time of the new atheist/secular movement with the other 3 horseman.

This book shocked me a lot. I knew Hitchen's had his classic, pointed style during religious debates, but I was naive to most of his other work in politics and everything else. He was such a man of erudition and staunch opinions but not so much that even he couldnt change his mind on his own political ideas. He was world traveled and well connected up to the top tiers of world politics. What a man and a life he lead! His body of work speaks for itself.

My only minor gripe, which only goes to listening without some in or over ear device, is his reading style. Not sure what exactly it was but his loudness modulations were odd. He would start a sentence with full volume and end with a near whisper having me change volume so much in-car. Your experience may vary...

The Hitch is immortalized.

The man in his own words. Spoken with his precision and baritone, I could not imagine his autobiography being read by anyone else. Like many, his presence is missed and his absence left a vacuum in the secular public forum. Thankfully we have this legendary reading of his life immortalized.

Truth, the whole truth and nothing but.

Hitch-22 is brilliant. I've read many articles by Christopher Hitchens over the years, and have always admired his take no prisoners journalism. This book is exactly that, and this time he's the target. The book is fabulous when he describes someone he likes, and delicious when he detests the subject.

I was especially intrigued with the Argentina portion. It was difficult to hear, but it makes a compelling case for Democracy, however imperfect. Mr. Hitchens' argument for the Iraq war is a terrific essay. I was, and still am, opposed to the war, but I found his insights helpful in understanding the other point of view.

This book is a love letter to America. Mr Hitchens sees the country with 20/20 vision and adores it, flaws and all. Hitch-22 should be required reading for all Americans.

I look forward to listening to this book a second time, which is something I rarely do. I love that he read it himself. It is tragic to think that we may lose this amazing writer. I want to scream "Please, don't leave me alone with the idiots"!

Engaging and edifying

Well written and read by the author. Hitchens is certainly one of the most gifted writers of recent times and it turns out that he is also an excellent narrator. I am not a fan of autobiography however being a fan of Hitchens I found his book to be as engaging and entertaining as any work of fiction.

All Hitch

For fans of the late, great Christopher Hitchens, this will be quite a treat. Hitch narrates his own words with typical gusto, recounting his various exploits and stances he's taken.

We miss you, Hitch.

I miss Hitch!

Wow. Hearing this after so many years after Hitch's death was stupendous. I was always a huge fan of his and I have this book, but hearing it was so much better.
